miss shel
Hi everyone, We gave our 4.5 month beagle his first bone last night. He loved it and just wouldn't leave it alone for hours. It also gave him something to chew that he liked - a big help for our hands that have been the substitute till now. Im no expert but if you are having problems with a biting puppy I suggest getting a meaty bone from the butcher. Shel
persephone
yep puppies are MEANT to chew bones  It is one of the few 'natural' things they can do in our modern world. So glad he enjoyed it!
kermat
We recently found a fantastic shop in Perth that specialises in raw bones and other meat products (dried pigs ears, trotters, dried kangaroo etc etc) for dogs - it was awesome!! We bought three raw lamb bones for our 7 month old beagle puppy, one of them keeps him busy for hours they are our saviour!!! We also give him the occasional raw chicken neck too but they last about 5 seconds, but he goes nuts over them!!
DistinctivelyTish
Good to know that you've found a replacement for your poor hands! lol. I have a pup as well and was wondering when the 'right' age would be to introduce her to bones. She's 10 weeks old now and all she's eating at the moment is dry dog food (Innova) and occassionally I give her a bit of a carrot for a treat. I don't suppose her little teeth could handle a bone now?
RedStafford
Asked this question myself a couple of months or so back Cayenne was about the same age as your pup... She's old enough for bones now... Personally I like getting brisket bones from the butcher, $2 is all they charge for a bag that lasts a week... have a look through this forum and the nutrition forum, you will see other recomendations of bone types... I watched cayenne pretty closely the first couple of times she had them, to make sure she wasn't doing anything stupid, like trying to inhale the whole thing... she loves her bones, now I just have to keep her from bringing them inside... considering purchasing a water pistol! only thing is she doesent do it when I'm watching... :p Red
caffiend42
Chicken wings, lamb offcuts - any meat with the bone :p Do a search on BARF (bones and raw foods) in the health section - meaty bones should ideally be the major part of the diet. Asalei
Mis Shel, we've noticed a dramatic decrease in our fingers being used for chewing purposes since starting our beagle puppies on chicken wings. Its nice now that we can have our puppy cuddles on the lounge and not have our fingers chewed off in the meantime!!
persephone
Our pups get bones anytime. Two 3 mth olds are eating everything at present...from chicken wings to rib bones to large leg bones, chicken carcase bits, rabbit frames.....I just hope I never fall over!! :p
king
Well done Miss Shel i am sure that your puppy is equally as rapt as you that you have discovered bones.. :D :D Good to know that you've found a replacement for your poor hands! Our breeder recommended bones for our puppy at 8 weeks as part of his diet, to keep his teeth in good condition and help with teething...Try your pup on lamb brisket boned he will love you for it
Asalei
For these bones, do you give them as a meal replacement? Or a treat?

Poodle wrangler
I reckon my 6 year old dog loves bones even more than our pup! Have been buying more than usual and our older dog's teeth look brighter (were OK to start with). Breeder told me to supervise with raw bones, however. Nothing cooked, of course. Both also loves pigs ears- easy to store in cupboard. My freezer is starting to bulge from all the dog food in there .
brothers_in_fluff
Right from the off we were told our 9 wk old pups could have chicken wings, which they get practically every day (I cut the wings into 3 pieces so they're only get a third each time)... they absolutely love them, for the next 30 mins all you can hear are two sets of jaws going chew-chew-chew. Given wings only cost $3 a kilo at our local butcher there's no excuse not too. The other type of bone we were recommended were cooked Lamb Shank bones... obviously being smoother and so hard no set of Maltese Shih-Tzu jaws could chew right through them, hence they'd be safe. Unfortunately my partner hates lamb so I don't reckon the boys will be getting any soon :-(
