Ashka
In addition to the wet food recall from Science diet, Iams, Euk, Nutro and many, many more. Dry food is now being tested. Personally I'd stop feeding any US / Canadian pet food till this mess is sorted out. Washington Post: The Food and Drug Administration has identified contaminated wheat gluten from China as the likely cause of poisoned pet food that has sickened a number of dogs and cats, and the agency is investigating to determine whether dry pet foods have also been affected, officials said today. In a news conference, Stephen F. Sundlof, director of the FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine, said FDA and independent laboratories have found a chemical called melamine in pet food samples, imported wheat gluten and urine and tissue from diseased pets. He said melamine is used in fertilizer in Asia and in plastic products but is not registered as a fertilizer in the United States. “Melamine is an ingredient that should not be in pet food at any level,” Sundlof said. Nor does it have any approved use in food for humans. He said the FDA is not aware that any of the contaminated wheat gluten went into human food, but said he could not confirm this “with 100 percent certainty.” Sundlof and FDA investigative officials said a company that was found to have imported the contaminated wheat gluten manufactures dry pet food as well as “wet” or “moist” food similar to that previously identified as the source of the illnesses. However, they said, investigators have not yet determined whether any of the wheat gluten has been used in any dry pet food. The officials declined to name the pet food company or the supplier pending the outcome of the investigation. Ashka
Next news bulletin: Hills Pet Nutrition recalls dry cat food Updated Fri. Mar. 30 2007 7:19 PM ET CTV.ca News Staff Officials in the U.S. now believe contaminated wheat gluten distributed by an unnamed U.S. company may have spread to dry pet food, despite assurances the problem was contained. Hill's Pet Nutrition, a division of Colgate-Palmolive Co., recalled its Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry cat food on Friday. The food included wheat gluten from the same supplier used by Menu Foods; however, Menu Foods is not affected by the latest recall because the company only manufactures wet pet food products. It's not the cheap stuff Edited March 31, 2007 by Ashka

ShesaLikeableBiBear
Ashka, the discussion here is on the possible recall of DRY food and whether or not those dry foods contain wheat gluten. Border14 Nutro does NOT use wheat gluten in their dry foods. Any information concerning these recalls should be avail. on the various websites. Nutro's website is: http://www.nutroproducts.com/ and you will find that the question concerning the recalls is on their front page.

morgan
Here's a US vet's comment on the Hills recall - And now the supposed " Global Leader in Pet Nutrition", Hills is recalling a prescription veterinary diet. It is a diet used for weight loss and diabetes in cats. At my practice we only special order in Hills prescription diets, and we have no current clients feeding it ( fortunately). Here is the details of the expanded recall... Hills Pet Nutrition, Inc.Recalls Single Product, Prescription Diet m/d Feline Dry Food, Only Product Containing Wheat Gluten. Hill's Pet Nutrition, Inc. is voluntarily recalling Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry food from the market. Hill's is taking this precautionary action because during a two-month period in early 2007, wheat gluten for this product was provided by a company that also supplied wheat gluten to Menu Foods. U.S. Food and Drug Administration tests of wheat gluten samples show the presence of a small amount of melamine. Recalled products U.S. & Canada UPC* Size Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry food 52742 42770 4 lb. bag Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry food 52742 42790 10 lb. bag Why is a company who is supposed to have the highest quality of ingredients, and the strictest quality control and testing, using the same source of wheat gluten used by all of those inexpensive supermarket brands? This is a prescription diet- only sold to veterinarians who are told it is of the "highest standard and quality". Yet again, another large pet food company is outsourcing to get the most inexpensive ingredients..and now more pets' lives are affected.
