Hello everyone. I'm looking for advice. I have a 6 month old corgi puppy(girlie) and I also have a 15 month big boy(also corgi). I'd like to know what age Pixie may come into season and how long it lasts for. I've had corgis most of my life but it must be 20 years ago I last had a bitch that had a season as we always have our dogs "sorted". My vet advised me to wait till she had a season before having her spayed. Its been so long I just can't remember and I forgot to ask the vet.

Bitches can have their first season at any time from about 6mths of age up to 2 years.

Usually it is between 6mths and 12mths but the first season can be so immature that you don't notice it unless you are looking for it. You may notice - a slight change in behaviour, the bitch may be licking more, a slight discolouration or a small amount of blood in the area.

If any of my bitches hadn't had a season by say 18mths I would be taking her to the repro. vet to find out why.

Hope this helps!

How long does a season last. I do know that its not just when she has a discharge or bleeding and will Merlin have to go his holidays while she is in heat? He has been "sorted" but will he still have the ... erm... urge?

It may be a good idea to speak to your breeder, who would have an idea of when it is likely to happen...

It may also be a good idea to speak to your breeder about when he/she recommends the dog be desexed, as you will find that opinions vary throughout the dog world...

There are different reasons why the vet would suggest to wait for her first season before spaying her. Its probably not a maturity issue, more so a medical or comfort factor for your bitch.

One of my bitches has an adolecent discharge, which was extremely irritating for her. If we had of spayed her hefore her first season, there would have been a good chance she would have continued to have this problem for the rest of her life. I dont know the reasons behind it, it was explained to me years ago, but ive forgotten now. Since her first season, the discharge has stopped.

If your vet prefers you to wait until after her first season, i would take his advise. Theres no real harm in it, but you will need to keep your bitch away from entire dogs for 3-4 weeks.

Good luck with it and enjoy the mess.
