Jaanka
Frodo is all ove 10 weeks old as I stated in my previous post - he is starting to hump Holly on a daily basis. Whilst I believe it is a dominance play atm - i think it is just a sign of things to come. I was talking to the hubby and we were wondering when is the earliest we can neuter the little man; cause we know this will help in the long term. I realise that once we start puppy preschool and obediance training it will help me with him as well.
shekhina
I wouldn't be desexing males until at least 6 months old, older in larger breeds, and females after two seasons...but that's just me :D
nick&erica
we are getting our rottweiler de-sexed. We have talked to our vet about it and she recomends atleast 6 months old, to ensure his balls have dropped etc etc 10 weeks is deffinately too young, consult your local vet. My dog is also dry humping the air a lot lol...but it's something to deal with untill he's old enough to get done. :D
blacklabrador
You can get him desexed now but it won't stop that behaviour - as you said it's not sexually driven, it's dominance play. He won't sexually mature for months (depending on his breed).
Stormy
There are plenty of pups that are desexed around 12 weeks old and do just fine. Many of the pounds do it. Me personally, as I don't show or breed my dogs (I just have family pets) I prefer 12 weeks, especially for males, as I've found the longer you leave it, dominance becomes a bigger issue (seen this happen in other peoples dog too) and as for the females, I've no desire to have one in season. All the dogs I have owned over the years have been fine physically, lived long lives and have so far not suffered diseases etc But that's just my opinion :D Speak to your vet, maybe speak to several vets, and see what the general consensus is. poodlefan
What breed is your pup? Do you have any interest in dog sports? If you do, you'll be delaying desexing until he is fully physically mature. Desexing probably won't stop the behaviour.

Poodlefan, he is a Blue Heeler x, and I am hoping to get into agility with him. Like I said i wanted to know how young is to young, I am not planning on desexing him yet; I know that he needs to mature as much as possible before desexing and I am aware that desexing will not get stop the humping issue entirely either. poodlefan
Jaanka: Poodlefan, he is a Blue Heeler x, and I am hoping to get into agility with him. Then personally, I'd be leaving it as late as possible. Dr Christine Zink (eminent American dog sports vet) recommends no dog sports dog be desexed prior to around 14 months. I, and many of my agility mates, agree with her. You want him to be fully physically mature - full bone and muscle development before you do it. Desexed dogs do not get the same level of development and males in particular tend to be taller and leggier if done early. Not what you want for an agility dog.
