carousel266
Hopefully this will help some people that are struggling like I was to find chicken necks etc for your doggies. I'm in Melbourne and had been looking everywhere, and the butchers were no help at all. Woolies at Greensborough had chicken necks and frames at the deli for $2/kg, and in the meat section I found lamb ribs, lamb neck joints, and heaps of other larger bones and joints of meat. Gave my two dogs a rib each this afternoon when I got home, and they didn't know what to do with them :-) They looked at me as if to say, what, you want us to work for our food? I am going to give them a chicken frame each for dinner, hopefully they won't be too big for them, we'll see how we go!
ReXy
safeway, some butchers will have chicken necks, im in melbourne and i get all my chicken for dogs at Leonards chicken shops. IGA/ Ritchies also has frames usually 2 or 3 on a tray for $1.99 with necks attached and good meat on them. some wholesale meat places will also have chicken frames etc,. i went to one once and they couldnt find a price/code for the box of frames, so he gave me the whole box, there was aprox 40 frames in the box, with a good amount of meat on them too.. all for FREE my dogs loveeeee frames. Dog_Horse_Girl
If you have a chicken wholesaler nearby you can't beat their prices. I used to get a 10kg box of frames (actually carcasses) for $6.00. One kg of chicken wings was $1.20 or so. Necks, again a 10 kg box for $10.00. Woolies is a bit expensive IMO. The other products are much cheaper at a traditional butchery...if you can find one! If you work in the CBD, why not head over to Queen Vic markets of a morning and buy your stuff there? There's plenty of choice and VERY cheap.

If you are just beginning to feed bones- go easy, too many bones all at once may cause tummy upsets to dogs that are not used to them.
carousel266
Thanks everyone. I thought I was so clever for finding them ;) I might try the Preston markets next time, it would be good if the fresh bones were to work out cheaper than premium pet food per day, so I can alternate them, and save some money! Staff n Toller, probably should have read that post before dinner! Never mind, will keep a close eye on them for the next day or so, and give them another small bone on Sunday or Monday. Dog_Horse_Girl
I started a "slow and steady" switch to raw foods, then decided that was a bit silly and did a rapid switch with no ill-effects. If anything the dogs coped far better with raw foods than with the processed food. ;) If you start with chicken and your dog has no problems, you can then introduce the next protein type and so on. carousel266
Hmmm found some ?vomit on the floor this morning, looks like they ate half the garden along with the chicken frame... lol They always throw up when they eat grass, I wonder if they ate too much of the lawn with the chicken frame, or was it the frame itself. I will give them a break today and tomorrow, and then give them some chicken necks on Monday.

I'm in Melbourne and had been looking everywhere, and the butchers were no help at all. there are butchers and there are butchers... my local guy does a lot of restaurant supplies (they use frames for stock) and orders frames in for me by the box ... I just ring him and ask for 'the usual'... I love my butcher.

They are soft bones so technically it shouldn't matter, but better to be safe at the beginning. ;) Edited February 24, 2007 by Staff'n'Toller
PRADA68
I buy a bag of chicken frames for $4 there is about thirty frames for that thats a full frame bum and all not just the rib cage. Necks I pay $1.20 per kilo and chicken mince is $10 for a 20kg box. Cheap as chips. Unlike Coles, Woolworths etc, they price them like gold. PRADA68
I to tell people that and their mouths just drop open and say where? I can't believe what people would spend on animals. Speaking of which did anyone see the Shih Tzu's on Talk to the Animals today? She had spent $70,000 on her two dogs. Holy Shit!! Spoilt little buggers or as my mum would say just loved.... suezija
Just be careful with too many bones as it can cause constipation as the bones leach the fluid from the intestines and cause hard, white stools. You might want to give sardines in oil or something similar a few times a week if bones make up a substantial part of your dog's diet.
