So Confused - Parvo And Puppy School

The Australian Olympic team members for Beijing are to be offered vaccinations for hepatitis, typhoid, polio, tetanus, whooping cough, diththeria, measles, mumps, rubella & influenza to minimise the chance of athletes catching any infection.

Bird flu is also a worry.

I would suggest the medical team would only recommend the athletes have these vaccinations because of the real risk of infection.

Same thing with your puppy as our olympians. It is only a couple of weeks they have to worry about, but why risk it.

Ok now this makes me think. I am bringing home my new puppy on Saturday. I already have a fur baby and she will be 1 year old tomorrow and she has had her needles, my question is i attend obedience classes with Miss Molly once a week, should i keep doing this or will this put my new pup at risk?

Ask your vet about Nobivac it is new to Australia. C5 is sooooo last year

only 2 injections the second one is at ten weeks.

wait one week and your pup will be FULLY covered at 11 weeks and ready for the world.

nothing more until their 12 month booster

While I agree that Nobivac sounds great it's important to note that it doesn't cover everything that a C5 does, so it is not something you should get instead of a C5.

Having said that, if you're only intending to get a C3 and don't need a C5 then I would say go for it

Oh. what does it leave out that C5 covers?. I just rang my vet and Nobivac covers distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus and Kennel Cough. she also had a seperate heartworm shot

is there something else we need?

Unless I'm reading it wrong, or the information is incorrect, it doesn't say anywhere on that site you posted that it covers Canine cough.

Incidently, are you talking about the one year heartworm shot? You might be ineterested in doing a search on the health forum about that one and reading the info, it has been discussed many times and most people recommend against it.

Yeah i may have posted the wrong info...sorry. it does not mention Kennel Cough but they assure me it covers it. I think there are two varients one does and the one I posted doesent.

So the heartworm shot is bad? why? thanks for that i am searching for it now....

EDIT TO ADD: found the info on the heartworm shot! they gave this to my pup at ten weeks at the same time as the Nobivac!! thanks for the heads up.

Regarding what this post was originally about, I agree with the majority of bloggers here, its not safe to take your pup out into the public until a week after their 12 week shot. That doesnt mean you cant take your dog anywhere, it just means dont take your dog to the park or walking down the street. I have always taken my pups from 8 weeks to socialise with friends dogs who I know are covered (show dogs mainly) so they get socialisation anyway. As for Kool, I think you should change your name to Fool. We come on here to get advice and share ideas, not waste time reading posts like yours.

I was also very paranoid about parvo when we got our puppy.

Looked into a couple of different puppy schools. One was at a large pet store, virtually in the car park, so that was a definite no no.

The other puppy school was in the vet's backyard area. I checked with the vet who said that no sick dogs were ever in this area. The only dogs allowed were his own dogs (imminised) and other dogs attending the puppy preschool ( you had to show evidence that these dogs had all had their initial shots. The puppy preschool lady strongly advised that I start our pup at 10 weeks at school even so I waited till about a week after the 12 week shots.

I was so paranoid about it that I wouldn't even take the dogs to my parents, because they had been lookig after someone else's dog about a year ago. (Apparently Parvo can hang around for a long time in the ground.)

All my research suggested the socialisation thing was also very important, so you probably just need to be sensible about it (rather than obsessive like me)
