tramissa Posted February 10, 2007 Share Posted February 10, 2007 Feed it raw - chicken mince, if pet mince, will contain some bone which is not good cooked (although will probably be okay as it is small, but wouldn't take the chance). Plus, cooked meats lose a lot of the nutrients dogs get from raw meat, so it is better for them to have it raw. I just gave her some raw with some rice (still has a bit of a funny tummy after the trip to me) and she scoffed the lot!!! So a big winner for her which is fantastic. I would give her the whole things, but she is so tiny that I am worried about giving it to her at the moment. I have been using cooked mince, since I have had my dogs, with no problems. It depends on how you expect the mince you use to contribute to your diet. I feed mainly a dry food diet, with hot cooked mince , mixed through the dry ( fed to the dogs when cooled ). The dogs love it and look fantastic on it. NEVER cook the mince if it's got any bones in it!!!!!!! I cook my chicken mince (breast or thigh) sometimes half cooked..... Fully cooked mince lasts a bit longer and less messy when your dogs have long floppy ears like mine I mix it with some veges at times too. They get RAW chicken wings and recently chicken carcasses....I pick the small ones for them so I dont have to sit for hours watching what they're doing ;) They do fine on it and quite happy ;) Cooked chicken mince is alright as training treats too (as long as you dont mind getting your hands a little messy Edited February 11, 2007 by kaywoman68 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

The reason for not feeding cooked chicken with complete bones is that the cooking makes the bones brittle, and they are more likely to splinter. Cooking the mince destroys the calcium. They may *work* on one level (that is, 'food' goes in, waste comes out) but aren't all ideal for the dog's digestive system or overall health. The day I see a dog cooking its meal is the day I feed my dogs cooked foods. Guest kitakins Posted February 11, 2007 Share Posted February 11, 2007 oi! when kuma was on chicken she HAD to have it cooked. for some reason she couldnt handle raw chicken. i persisted for a few weeks and it just wasnt working. not every dog can handle it. im all for raw but it comes down to what the dog does best on. My dogs get mainly raw meat, but Silver in particlular loves cooked (BBQ) chicken as well - it is her fave and she gets it for a treat on special occasions. I cant stand the smell it almost makes me throw up - i dont like chicken products normally, but this is really gross. I can handle giving him the necks an wings, but not the pet mince. I use chicken mince, and it never smells of anything except chicken mince. Chicken breeds bacteria faster than beef, so perhaps your mince is a bit old, or off? Beef is fine. Tinker, that is one really cute pup - what a winning smile in the second picture. What is she? Edited to say - Tony, I don't think I'd recommend roo for pups, speciallly small breed ones - it can be a bit rich for pups, and you know what happens then!! Beef and mutton are good though. poodlefan Posted February 12, 2007 Share Posted February 12, 2007 Chicken wing tips (available from larger chicken places like Leonards) would be great for such a little tacker (she's lovely and I agree about the nice nails) Jimmy if your kelpie pup will eat chicken necks and wings there's no need to feed chicken mince - its primary value is the bone it contains. But I agree it did tend to smell more than wings/frames I now feed wings or frames and they love it and it helps to keep their teeth white. I didnt know about the frames , necks and wings tho and will try some next time I'm in Canberra. I might add that our guys are in spectacular condition on the diet they get.
