She has had a steriod shot at the vets and been prescribed prednisolone, which I only give her when she's really bad as it makes her very depressed. I have just been reading the itchy dog thread and decided to have a look in my garden to see if there is a plant there that may be causing all her problems.... I just took these pictures - is this Wandering Jew? Please help! I would love to stop having to medicate my girl, and mostly for her to stop itching/biting/licking and being uncomfortable. You need to dig it out and poison or cover with newpaper. Fence the area off if you can and it is very hard to kill off completely but if you can section it off somehow keep hitting it with round up as it grows back. Also, just as a side note: is the prednisolone the vet prescribed likely to result in long term negative health issues? The vet never mentioned anything about it! ReXy Posted December 29, 2006 Share Posted December 29, 2006 well , now you have some answers, hopefully she will improve and be much happier.. it can be really nasty stuff, i know my mum had it in her garden and my ACD suffered badly from it,, going back a few years now tho. good luck in getting rid of it,, get some professional advise on how to, as i know the stuff grows like mad,, and just pulling it out may not get rid of it all.. as someone else said,, maybe u can fence of the area if possible too.. To answer your question Becky - my dog thinks it's hilarious. Just try keeping a golden retriever away from freshly dug earth.... I am going to a nursery tomorrow to get advice and tools and figure out some way of keeping her away from the dug-up patches. Maybe if I cover the areas in rocks or pebbles or hay or woodchips??? I would buy err towards buying a product like 'keep off' or similar name, sorry can't remember, but as much as possible covering and fencing it. JulesP Posted December 29, 2006 Share Posted December 29, 2006 It is evil stuff to get rid of. Basically forget getting rid of it in one go! I used a rake on mine, rather than pulling up, that worked really well. I ended up with 15 big bags of the stuff and it is now starting to regrow. Other tips I got were - put fire ash on it, put some dishwashing liquid in the Round-Up to help it to stick to the leaves. The cheap cortisone cream from a chemist works well on the itches! I had it at one house I lived in...we spent weekend after weekend with the hoe, rake, spade, and black plastic trying to dig it out and smother it. It's not an easy thing to kill and therefore is a VERY successful weed. What worked was being persistent in digging it up; covering any remnants with black plastic weedmat and securing the mat to the ground; spraying with FULL STRENGTH weedkiller such as Roundup ; not disturbing the soil too much around it (so the new roots and shoots can't easily get into the soil to grow).
