Pitbull575
Hi all Sorry if this topic has been listed and dealt with before but im confused... We are adopting a 6mth old rescued Pit Bull cross boy and wish to get him obedience trained in a group so as to socialise him among other dogs etc. On phoning a few trainers in melb we were rudely told "Pit Bulls cannot be obedience trained by law" If this is true then it sucks(i shudder remembering the old cow we first called, ordered us to kill him ) Does anyone know where we can get our boy socialised and trained in a group where he will be welcome? We are in the outer eastern suburbs of melb.Any advice would be welcome Thanks....Scott edited to correct (he's a cross bred Pitty so according to my local ranger...safe) Edited November 30, 2006 by pitbull575
Nekhbet
call the National Dog Trainers Federation or Australian Dog Training. They should be able to point you in the right direction.

Cosmolo
We train all dogs regardless of breed but it does cost more in insurance to do that which is probably why many places do not. When we said to the insurance company we would be dealing with restricted and/ or dangerous dogs they upped our premium by a significant amount. Feel free to look at the website below. Good Luck!! Rusky
On phoning a few trainers in melb we were rudely told "Pit Bulls cannot be obedience trained by law" Then the trainers aren't worth their salt Fools Good luck finding a nice club to join, or move over here to WA, all breeds means all breeds, no prejudice at our club. Erny
The regulations and attitudes have created a preposterous situation haven't they? Dogs not allowed to train because they are deemed "dangerous". Dogs are dangerous because they're not allowed to train. Go figure.
diamonds2009
yes i totally agree. ALL dogs need to be obedience trained. letting them 'run amok' with no discipline is like not discipling a child. what respect or manners do expect one to have if not disciplined. ReXy
no dog should be deneyd the oppertunity and owner the right to train their dog that does suck,, as far as i know my club does not discriminate against breeds,, we have a range of bull breeds and crosses at our club. when my boy SBT was a pup i was asked if he was a pittbull and the trainer actucally asked me and said ohhh what a lovely pitty pup.!!! i did correct her , and she said ohh well there are some lovely pitts and crosses around.. good on you for bringing him... im not sure where you are located but if you would like details pm me get your dog out there as a pup socialise and train and make a great example out of him, prove the bastards wrong....lol
wheres my rock
SAdly i think its a vca rule that those breeds declared dangerous arent allowed at vca affiliated dog clubs i could be wrong but im sure i was told that a while ago am going to check today
Staranais
You're right Erny, it's a self fulfilling prophesy. They want to stop pitbull owners obedience training their dogs because their dogs are apparently too dangerous. Then they will get to point to all the untrained, unsocialised pitbulls out there as proof that pitbulls really are dangerous dogs. (i shudder remembering the old cow we first called, ordered us to kill him ) I shudder to think this woman calls herself a dog trainer! I wouldn't let her near my dog for the world. bulldogz4eva
Dogs not allowed to train because they are deemed "dangerous".Dogs are dangerous because they're not allowed to train. Exactly.I did point this out to the morons in parliament that they are creating a situation that in time will become more dangerous to the public. I have never had a problem here in WA nor been turned away, but then again I dont go advertising what my dog is.

I rang the VCA regarding this last time the topic was around. I was told they have no such rule This was only about 2 months ago. Our obedience club (VCA affiliated) has a slogan 'All breeds welcome'. If this rule is correct we will have to change it. I do not agree with it as I think all breeds should be trained to at least basic obedience and if we are not allowed to train them where do they go?? I may just give the VCA another call
haven
To my knowledge, both ADT and Four Paws accept all breeds for training
alexcan99
The VCA does not recognise a breed called a Pit Bull, in fact there is no breed. Call it an American Staffordshire Terrier cross and you wont be wrong as APBTs and Amstaffs are the same breed just called different names by different clubs. I dare say unless you know the parents are APBTs for sure then they are Amstaffs. Point out this ridiculous situation to all your friends and encourage them to boycott all organisations which support BSL like the RSPCA and the danger they pose to society. Erny
I may just give the VCA another call May I start by stating this is not a "troll" post. My intention is not to flame, inflame or ridicule. It is derived from a genuine concern as well as either an accurate observation, or perhaps misplaced observation. Way back when BSL was proposed but legislation not passed. Proposal to legislate against tail docking was also a concern. VCA organised a protest rally at the Treasurey Gardens one weekday afternoon. I was appalled at the BSL legislation and telephoned a representative of the VCA to discuss more in detail, so I could better understand the proposals. The representative I spoke to gave very little time to the subject of BSL. It was all about the woes of not being able to dock tails. I informed him that I was reasonably indifferent to the topic of tail-docking - that I found this to be a personal choice and provided it was done humanely, had not objections to it. Nor did I object if tails weren't docked. I further explained that with this in mind, I really wanted to know that the protest rally, which would require me to take an expensive day off work to attend, would give good representation to our protest against the proposed BSL. Although very apparently more concerned with anti-docking than BSL, the VCA representative assured me the protest was against BSL as well. I took the better part of the whole of the day off work and attended the rally. Compared to the content put forth and denounced in relation to anti-docking laws, a thimble-full was put forth in relation to BSL. I went away from that rally (which progressed to the steps of parliament house) feeling quite despondent, as IMO, there was little to no announcement that would serve to the listening public to inform them of the BSL and how it would affect, nor to make it clear to any parliamentarians who MIGHT have chosen to listen, our views and why we had them. As a result, and given the VCA rules prohibiting PB types from training, I can't help feeling that the VCA is in favour of BSL ...... or is at least indifferent enough to it NOT to fight it more openly. Particularly given that there are no laws to suggest that a restricted breed is not permitted and yet they deny that right based on breed. A very "BSL" type stance to take, IMO. As I said. This is not intended to inflame VCA members and supporters. It is not intended to defame the VCA. It is merely an observation that is my own and I freely admit that perhaps my thoughts are mis-guided................. but are they?
