pipppy Posted November 27, 2006 Share Posted November 27, 2006 Well you have lots of time to get him use to it and lots of time to make sure the yard is puppy friendly. Ease him into it, when you are out there playing with him back off after a while and let him have his own fun, slowly make the times longer that you leave him. If he whines to come in, i have read that you should never give into him as this will send the wrong message, we have been very lucky our boy never whines to come in....he actually seems to love it out there. Maybe just also have really fun special "outside" toys that he doesnt have in the house", if he is excited about new toys he will be less likely to notice you are not right beside him. Is there a covered area outside to protect him from the weather? We have a big pergola and we have his kennel and food and water under there and in all weather conditions he is very protected. Diesel the Weasel Posted November 27, 2006 Share Posted November 27, 2006 My puppy stays outside during the day while I am at work ( I come home for lunch, so he does 3-4 hours at a time). He is quite happy - has his kennel under the verandah with some old jumpers of mine for the smell. He has HEAPS of different toys, and I try to buy some interactive ones like Kongs that keeps him busy for a while. I also give him a chicken neck to chew on when I leave, so he associates me leaving with a treat! I think the reality is though, that he sleeps most of the time when I am not there because he is full of beans at lunch time and when I get home in the afternoon. The neighbours say he is quiet except for when their dogs start barking first! Good luck - I am sure Sam will be fine on his own for a while! Freckles Posted November 28, 2006 Share Posted November 28, 2006 I haven't had one beagle in the yard by herself, but you might try scattering some feed around the yard. If you feed dry food get yourself a treat ball (or an empty 1lt drink bottle with holes punching in the sides) and start playing with her now and show her how the feed falls out as she moves the ball (or bottle) around. As you will have found out by now beagles are lead by their nose and tummy. The best way I distract a new foster is getting them to search the yard for food instead of sitting around bored and then looking for a way to get out. I leave trails of dry food (very minimal) that lead to a big meaty bone so it takes them some time to follow the treats. When they find the bone they spend hours chewing on the prize. pipppy Posted November 28, 2006 Share Posted November 28, 2006 I have a whole set of goodies that I rotate when not at home so he doesnt get bored, Kong, treat ball, big marrow bones, a teething toy that i cover in peanut butter and lots of assorted chew toys, he never has these outside toys in the house so he is pretty happy to be outside when these are around.
