blue elephant pjs Posted December 5, 2006 Share Posted December 5, 2006 I'm not in melbourne but i love my vet. i worked with one and changed after he performed surgery that resulted in the passing of a child hood pet. I now travel 30mins up to get to them but they are responsive friendly answer all dumb questions, work with the dogs they even treat my dogs to make them comfortable and the nurses even remember us. too bad you aint in perth i'd reccommend them Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
springdog Posted December 6, 2006 Share Posted December 6, 2006 Thought i trusted my vet until recently, (well known in south eastern suburbs) when my dog was very sick i took me 45 mins to get him to take a blood sample, this had been requested by the vet at a animal emergency centre ;) and then he proceeded to tell me take him home he mostly likely wont die today, Can't repeat what i said to rude but i am sure you can imagine, Will never use this vet again. My dog was admitted at Hallam Emergency later that day and was touch and go but thanks to the skill and knowledge of the Vets at Hallam my dog is alive today. Many of the breeders/show people I know go to Monash and I really cannot recommend them highly enough. Same here - while I do have a vet that is only 5 minutes from my door step (Monash is a good 45 minutes away in off peak traffic) which I use for vaccinations and less serious stuff such as nicks and scrapes - I use Monash for the more serious stuff. They make you feel so at ease and take the time to explain things clearly. They also dont give you "worst case scenario is the only scenario" opinions when looking over your pet like my local vet does. Or they insist on charging excessive amounts of money for simple things, despite the fact that I am bringing in multiple animals on a regular basis. Then I found a vet who does a great deal for multiple vacc's, but I don't trust her at all with anything serious. Last time I took my dog to the vet for his limp, I was charged hundreds of dollars to be told "we have no idea what it is". I have spent so much money trying to find out what is wrong, but nobody can tell me. They don't mind charging me huge amounts of money for the pleasure though! Another vet killed one of my foster pups when he didn't sterilise his equipment before removing its dew claws (it was a rotty and had doubles), and almost killed the whole litter. And yet another vet gave me a puppy for free (when I was 16 she came into my workplace, handed the puppy to the nearest person, and left) and said we could have free vet work. When we got her home, I saw the puppy could not stand up properly because her back legs would collapse from under her. The idiot vet didn't even check her over before giving her to someone! When we took her in to be checked out, the vet told us the pup would have to be PTS because her knee caps were out of place. Thankfully, we sought a second opinion and found out it was just poor nutrition. She is a perfectly healthy, happy dog! Needless to say, we did not take the vet up on her offer of free vet work! She was the only vet I could find who would do a vaccine antibody titer test for me. If you don't want to be hard sold on the "over-vaccinate, give your dog Science Diet because they pay for my holidays, treat skin problems/ auto-immune diseases caused by over-vaccination and Science Diet with this super expensive product and drug I sell" line that my last vet peddled, I highly recommend her. (Sorry for the rant - Can you tell I've got a bit tired of vets with that attitude? ). Hi monsterpup, I am a little confused with your post, lol. You said that Dr. Hoskins was the only doctor that would do a titer test for you but then you proceed to say that if someone DOES NOT want to hear about the side effects of OVERVACCINATING then she is the one to go for So does Dr. Hoskins recommend yearly vaccinations or not? lol. Vets that are honest enough to admit that overvaccinating is a real risk are very few and far between and the day that I will find a vet that will proceed to explain the risks of a yearly jab is the day that I will be screaming his/her name from a mountain top but so far no such luck!!!!!!! I know ...long way to go, but my Vet of 18 years is honest, wonderful with animals, and knows his stuff, he has been a vet for 35 years, I would trust him with my dogs life and my own if need be. So many things factor into what makes a vet trusted by some. What may be seen as good service by some, may be seen as excessive by others. I very much believe in the basics being done (ie vacc, worm, flea treatment). However I can easily see how things can get out of hand for those who don't have a lot of money. Ie - elderly pensioners cannot always afford pre ga blood tests, fluids etc for an animals surgery. For me, a good vet is one who can see these restraints. Yes it's great to do everything by the book with fluids, bloods etc. However, money constraints will mean that corners may need to be cut. It is also more appreciated by the owner, if the vet understands these constraints and tries to work around them.
