Barking Dog!

OK, now from the outset let me say that I have NEVER had a problem with overly noisy dogs. Until now.

Background info: I bred this dog. He was never a noisy puppy and was a house dog. When he was 8 months old due to unforseen circumstances he went to live interstate with a friend and became a kennel dog for 4 months. And apparently, if his behaviour here is anything to go by, a VERY noisy kennel dog. Unfortunately there was rarely anybody at home during the day most days of the week so his behaviour was left unchecked and it is now an incredibly bad habit.

He is 16 months old and barks at ANYTHING. Everything to be precise. Anything that moves, anything that doesn't move. Anything that might THINK about moving. Anything that once did move, or may for that matter move in the future. He lays down comfortably in the back yard or on the back steps and barks. He barks at the next-door neighbours. He barks at the dog belonging to the neighbours on the other side. If I bring him inside and crate him, he sooks to go back outside so I show him the dreaded "voice of doG" (spray bottle of water) and he'll shut up for a while. When I let him back out, he starts barking as he hits the back doorstep!

But the outside barking is really getting to me. I HATE barking dogs and I particularly hate this dogs' poofy, chortling bark which is only a noisemaker and has no real purpose behind it.

I have tried the anti-barking collars and did my dough. I doubt I'll find a vet in Tasmania to debark him because apparently it isn't allowed here. So short of sending him interstate to have him debarked in another state........WHAT CAN I DO TO MAKE HIM SHUT THE (you-know-what) UP????

He's Jonty's brother, isnt he? :cry::cry::)

Seriously, I dont know, Im using a collar on Ebony right now, but only to stop her barking when I tell her to & that seems to be working, but I have NO clue what to do with Jonty (he barks inside the house, even when you are standing over the top of him, I wouldnt even consider a collar on him), if you get any responses I'd be interested to read them  .

He's a fair little sod, that's for sure!!

Honestly, what did I do to deserve this?:)

About the only time it shuts up is when it is asleep or eating and I can't keep shoving food in his mouth!

I think I'm going to have to bite the bullet and research the debarking as much as I'd rather not. I'm even worried about having his microchip done because of the issues we've been through with strangers handling him. :)

Thanks for the link but I have already tried similar but it didn't work.

This dog is just a barker. He isn't a social barker, he isn't deprived of attention, he has no reason TO bark. He just barks. I've been breeding/exhibiting dogs for 20 years and know only too well the perils of rewarding bad behaviour and negative attention etc so it isn't so much a "bad owner" problem as a dog who just doesn't know when to shut up.

Oh I'm sorry, but that just cracks me up!

Barking dogs suck, I cannot stand the neighbourhood barking dogs and I have been known, on a VERY bad day, to kick the fence and growl at the little bastards to scare them into shutting up because I cannot stand their barking anymore! It is constant, and I mean constant. I really don't understand how they even have a voice left to bark with anymore.

I have had problems with Kovu barking in the past, because he also got sick of the yappy things over the back and gets shitty with them at the fence and barks back at them. The only thing that worked for him was staying outside with him for quite some time during the day and seriously growling at him everytime he went near that area of the fence.

Kovu's problem solved. It took a loooong time and my throat hurt a lot...but now I only have to raise my tone at the end of Kovu's name to make him come away from that end of the fence. He still wants to go off at them, but I go off bigger and louder than he does :)

If you've tried everything and nothing has shown any sign of working then strangl...uh, debark him...better to be an alive debarked dog than a dead dog

Yeppers....we're on the same wavelength! At this point in time I could cheerfully reach down his throat and debark him with my bare hands and no anaesthetic!!

Oh god, one lot at a time!

Can you imagine this place with 3 dogs, 5 cats and 2 kids running around...I thrive on chaos, but that is suicide :)

Geez woman, where is your sense of adventure?

OK then....you win, but I'll hold you to it!!

Hmmmmm....wanna babysit Michael overnight on the 2nd? :)

Michael is more than welcome to stay over on the 2nd, so long as you bring a crate because I've only got 2.

Kovu and Daegon don't mind sharing but I don't like the chances of sticking Michael in with the cats and finding everyone in one piece in the morning

Seriously? Are you sure?? It would be fabulous if you're sure he won't be a problem. It would probably do him good actually. Make him realise that there are people OTHER than me in the world!!!

And if you can stop him from barking so much I'll buy you a HUUUUGE block of chocky!!

You guys are cracking me up... I started reading your thread cuz my Vizsla barks ALL the time. She especially likes to bark at her reflection in the window. You made me forget what MY problem was. Anyway, Lily just reminded me (bark, bark). She wears a citronella collar & it only slightly helps. She's pretty tightly wound so I'm going to talk to the vet Monday about first trying Clomicalm. I've read a couple of pretty remarkable success stories that included barkers. Don't know if that's something you'd even consider (Rx)?

First one was a Bark Stop, 2nd one I can't remember and I've lost the box.

I can't use Citronella because I'm allergic to it so a citronella collar is a bit out of the question too. Oh and I've heard that people have had good results with a remote device they purchased from Dyna Direct but I can't really afford to lay out $190 on something that might not work when I can spend roughly the same and send him to Melbourne for a more "permanent" solution...IYKWIM.

Seriously, he's a menace!

Poor fellow must have really hated being locked up. All I can offer is to just keep talking to him, try and keep him as calm as possible, keep telling him to be quiet and reward him when he is.

I acknowledge when mine bark by looking for the reason. If there is no real reason, I say something to that effect, but if there is a reason, then I tell them they are a good dog.

They now seem to understand that they are only supposed to bark if I need to be notified eg a visitor.

It can take weeks or months to replace a habit permanently, have patience, keep talking to him and cuddle him lots. Best of luck. HTH.
