Nekhbet
Welcome to the wonderful world of the Belgian Malinois and people ask me if they make good pets that is an incredible video I wish I had the facilities to own dogs of that calibre! Jeff Jones
the guys in this video are from the french GIGN (Groupe de Sécurité et d'Intervention de la Gendarmerie Nationale) they are a specialist counter terrorism group kind of like Americas "Delta Force" soldiers but these guys have more training and are used more often, they are by far the best military unit in the world trained in counter terrorism/hostage rescue. thats enough useless info for now tho... stacey and douglas
Ya my last two dogs were Malinois. There work ability is second to none. I bought this black shepard after my mal died. The gsd makes a better family dog. This shep also has a pretty good blood line so she still does the job just not as much fire. Hope to have her on the suit soon. She starts well but hits soft. lot of work to do.
Working_Setters
Just like Inspector Rex - well almost These dogs are really wired, notice even the handler copped a bite, but I assume the dog wasn't serious or else this hand would be in far worse shape. HE WAS SERIOUS ALRIGHT, BUT THE HANDLER SEEMED TO CATCH IT PRETTY SOON. Edited November 22, 2006 by sasjeep
stumped
That is a great video, would provide for hours of discussion on many angles . Shows that extreme Mal enthusiasm, and how useful a committed K9 can be. My thought is that the same job can be done with a cooler head and no handler aggression, but that is one full on team of Mals.
Nekhbet
That is not neccesarily handler aggression. Could just be the dog is in such a high drive state that it grabbed what was restraining it. Happens occasionally. If the dog was serious about aggressive behaviour that handler would have com off a lot worst. My Mal got me once, I had her by a flat collar, my ex played his drumkit and she went berzerk. Turned to grab me but I caught her in time to not get a full bite. Its a working dog - it happens. Sasjeep how old is your GSD? Are you getting nice full bites or you having bounce offs? Jeff Jones
the handler was pretty silly for waving his hand which looks exactly like the bite toy he pulled out infront of the little prey monster this is why i prefer not to use a secondary bite toy to train a dog to leave.. stumped
The perp was restrained and inactive, the handler was communicating with the dog and was bitten, if that was a real situation and not training that act could get his handler killed not saved, it shouldnt happen. haven
Are you guys talking about the third bite? It looks to me like the guy has a tug, not that the dog bites the handler.
Jeff Jones
he does bite the handler...you see the handler peel back his glove and look at his hand after the dog lets go, i believe the dog thought the handlers hand was a bite toy and the dog latched on thinking it was receiving a reward, either way wearing black gloves and using a black bite toy as a reward is prety silly
stacey and douglas
Ya not a fan of using a tug as reward for outting. Better at first to distract and then down the dog. "Watch" in down keeps the blood up.. Then lots of love. This is for sport not police or protection.. protection is a whole other game. What are your thoughts. Golden Girl
Whilst I genuinely appreciate the amount of training that has gone into these dogs, the images portrayed were a little disturbing IMHO.

After he outs it you can see it in the handlers hand (if that is in fact what it is). Doesn't look to me like the bite was intended for the handler and if it were, as someone said I'm pretty sure there would be more damage considering he actually swings the dog around on whatever it has a bite on. Jeff Jones
i agree i dont think there was any malice in the bite the dog just made a mistake and bit the hand thinking it was the toy... didnt look like there was much damage to the handler and i bet he wont make the same mistake again Whilst I genuinely appreciate the amount of training that has gone into these dogs, the images portrayed were a little disturbing IMHO. what was wrong with the images? Nekhbet
When my malinois was little i did the toy swap as a distraction for out. Her reward was 'restart', going for the toy then getting it again. She developed a lovely OUT byt 6 months old - she would out and sit waiting for me. I would not start again until she was calm. Havnt had an issue in the dog snapping back for it. At the moment she is doing protection work, but she still outs and waits for the command... i love my baby boo hehehe Her only problem is her overexcitement and sometimes she just grabs before I let her or she has given me enough focus. Transferring her focus from the decoy to me and holding it there needs a lot more work. tmc a dog is a living creature not a machine. Even guns backfire. Shite happens, the dog is under pressure and sometimes grabs blindly under extreme stress. If the dog wanted to attack the handler he wouldnt have shaken it off so easily, and it would have gone for the face or upper body, not just the hand. Golden Girl these dogs are bred for this work. Malinois are made for this and if they couldnt do it they wouldnt, this is not something you can force a dog into they have to want to. Why do you think its so hard to pull them off, the dogs are having their extreme drive satisfied by getting the bite and holding. Remeber these are not pets, these are military level working animals bred and trained for a purpose. Edited November 23, 2006 by Nekhbet
Jeff Jones
i prefer to give a re-bite as a reward and use 2(sometimes more) decoys that way the dog isnt focussing on me for a reward and is alert waiting for a second decoy to come out,
Golden Girl
What's wrong with the images? Nothing if you like watching dogs repeatedly take down a human being. Like I said, I appreciate the level of training the dog has to do to achieve the level of skill they have, and in the appropriate situations I applaud the dog and handlers talent, but I'm just not the sort of person who likes to watch that sort of stuff.
