Andoria1
Hi, I have been trying so hard to teach my puppy how to walk with me. Atm when i walk with him he seems to get so excited about the trees, grass, leaves anything that is in the park to the point that he wont listen to any commands other than sit. When i tell him to sit, he will sit. And then i say walk. Soon i say that he thinks that its ok to sprint off to anything that is in his direction, to the point that i go off flying with him. Also when walking there are times where he likes to put the leash in his mouth and dirrects me in the dirrection of where he wasnts to go. I have tried to tugg the leash. Stop walking when he starts pulling on the leash. Stop and walk the opposite direction. But nothing seems to be working. hes 7 months old. Atm he knows how to fetch, sit, down, roll over, ball (find his ball) , go get it (he gets his soccer bone squeeky toy). Bring it back. and Stay. And he hasnt gone to a trainning school yet. Any other ideas to walk a dog would be great.
huski
All I did with my husky was shorten the lead, so he HAD to walk beside me. I wouldn't give him enough lead to walk in front of me, so he had to heal. He was older when I did this so I'm not sure how it will work on a pup but once he realised that was where he had to walk he stopped pulling that day. Maybe you could try a halti? It worked wonders on my husky until he got hold of it and chewed it till it broke ;)
sas
I have a 6 month old puppy in my care, he mastered Heel in 2 days with clicker training and I'm a Virgin to clicker training thanks to PAX who gave me the heads up on how to do it. We've used clicker training with this puppy for other commands as well and I'm really enjoying it. There are many different methods to teaching heel and I'm sure others will pop in and let you know what works for them. I would suggest that you go back to training in your backyard until your dog understands your cues. I would also suggest that you read more into Leadership techniques and practice programs such as NILIF and TOT. Getting him into obedience class is a great way to get a start on items you're struggling on if you haven't been there before and some new smells and interactions for your pooch. It will also teach you about how to handle your dog when you are training ;) Edited November 21, 2006 by sas
MonElite
PAX seems to be doing great in the advice department Althought I have somewhat resisted the clicker she had lend me a schutzhund book and I followed it over last two weeks or so and although, not great, my 7 month old puppy understand the concept of heeling now. Go on Myszka give the clicker just a little go just so you can tick one more thing off LOL Myszka, how is your girl taking to drive training? Does she have natural drive or did you need to build it? MonElite
According to the guru she doesnt have enough, but as a pet IMHO she has enough. She preffers toy to the food but is keen enough on the treats as well. Her biggest problem is that she doesnt really like people and becomes defensive before you know it. Actually she doenst like anything/anyone that she doesnt know.... Re natural v's build drive, I dont have a clue LOL I tried building but failed, made mistakes, had probs as she jerked herself on a tieout and than would do it tied up. But she chases the toy and goes nuts when I bet the ball out and go training with her. I have tried directed retrieves with her with two balls couple of days ago and she got the idea in about 3-4 goes, I was dancing with joy. And I tried different order of retrieving, various angles, distances etc. Very smart dog, and she remembers EVERYTHING extremly well, the good and also the bad........ She is definitelly smarter than Rex but a lot more "hysterical".
sas
Sounds like she's doing really well for age. Are you looking at trialing her?

Kavik
myszka Give clicker training a go, you know you want to Once they get the hang of it (and you too) it is sooo much fun I have just taught Zoe to pick up an object and place it in the bin using a clicker. And I am using a clicker to teach Kaos the contact behaviour two on/ two off for agility. Divani is looking good

Kirty
Regarding the original post, I think it depends whether you want to teach heel for walking or for obedience/trialling. I have two dogs and it is near impossible to walk them together, both heeling. However, at obedience they both heel perfectly 99% of the time. I see walks as fun times - we walk to the park, do a little training, then they get an off-leash run. If I was to try and get them to heel when out walking, I would actually be teaching them to disobey me, because I am unable to reinforce the command. So when walking, I put my dogs on a harness and let them pull. However, they know that when the check chain goes on they have to work. If your dog is very strong, try a Halti or Gentle-Leader. Good luck!

So when walking, I put my dogs on a harness and let them pull. I own two dobes, a 38kg 7yo male and a 31kg 7 months old female (as in the pics above) where Im 55kg and I comfortably walk both of them on lead. Not to heel just on loose lead or lets call it slightly tensed but now pulling. There is no need for the dogs to drag you around....... I can just picture my two dobes on harnesses pulling
