poor bub, i hope all turns out well.

Do you think maybe you should consult Dr Childs again? or are u already? Also, could u send an email to the sydney uni people who are researching epi and see if they know of anything similar? My vet knows the people at syd uni and so asks for their help at time and they are very nice about it.

i am lucky as my boy does not suffer from ataxia except after an attack. When his meds are upped he is a bit off but not much. poor monte i want to see his cute tail curled again v soon.

could u buy him new food in case there is something wrong with his food? i know its a stretch but a bad batch of food is known to happen.

have u scoured ur house to ensure no external probs?

im sure u have but thinking outloud incase

god i hope there is a good outcome for you puggles and for monte.

Hi staffy-lover,

I am calling Dr Childs today to discuss his meds and what is happening.

We have taken him off the bromide as it appears it could possibly be bromide toxicity. I am still researching the new kibble to see if it could be this. I have ruled out almost everything else. It could be that the new food is lower in salt then the previous kibble and this means that the bromide is absorbed more by this system but as kibble is not his main food I am unsure of just how much this would affect him.

The scope showed that while his ospehagus was dilated it was only a little and not enough to be magaesophagus.

He is back home but still not well.

Good news! Monte is very much improved  I am so relieved that my gorgeous teddy bear is back on the road to recovery.

We have confirmation that is was bromide toxicity (aka as an overdose of bromide). The levels had built up in his system over the past 8 months. His last levels were done in January and all was well (he was on the lower end of the sale for both Pb and Kbr) so something between then and now caused it to change.

Georgina, his neurologist, has suggested a new drug regime and we will be trialling this.

yeah !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is excellent news !!!

atleast u know what u r dealing with now.

are u going to use gabapentin? or just use more phenomav and less epibrom (bromide)?

any news on what might have caused the build up?

glad all is well and a big smooch to monte from the staffy gang

I'm beginning to also suspect a difference in the absorbiton of liquid bromide vs tablets.

For those with epi's on bromide, who gives a liquid form and who gives tablets?

Have you ever noticed a difference in seizure control or absorbtion if you have switched between the two?

Charlie is on liquid bromide - I actually didnt even know there was a tablet form - but the liquid is easy enough, just one squirt in his dinner each night. But in answer to your question - I dont know if there is a difference between liquid and tablets - what have you found so far?

Thanks Bec.

puppiesmum, I didn't record when he was on tabs or when we switched to liquid but I have a sneaking suspicion that the liquid maybe absorbed easier in the body. He was on the liquid initially and then we switched to tabs and this, from memory, seems to coincide to when he was having loads of clusters. We went back onto liquid late last year (I think) and now he is suffering from his levels being far too high.

Anyone else have any different experiences with bromide??

  • 1 month later...

Hi there,

Just checking in to see how the epi dogs are doing. We are now 8 weeks seizure free and she hasn't even had any focals in that time. Maybe due to the last episode being a big bad cluster and also upping her Pb slightly. We still haven't put KC on KBr, but she has bloods in 2 months so will talk to her vet then. Even with her higher dose you would still not know she is on meds. She is 5 1/2 now, we presume she might stop acting like puppy at some stage! She is quite a little girl and fluffy, but I think people presume she is a puppy because of the way she acts as well. Always getting asked "awwww, how old is your puppy?". We are looking at getting a new puppy now (a small breed not a third BC), will be interesting to see how she goes with that.

Have added KC's photo that will be in the Epil-K9 email list fund-raising calendar this year!

Molly seems to continue seizure-free. We obviously don't know if she's had any more when we're at work...there are no signs of her seizing when we get home so I have to assume the meds are adjusted properly and doing their job. :D

The dogs all need their annual checkup this month. I'll be asking about whether we should do another blood work-up for Molly...or if she's OK to keep on the meds a bit longer...or what other options we have available.

Saw this post and thought I would give you a bit of an update with Toby - our Staffy X who began having grand mal sieziers earlier this year (some of you might remember - i got some great advise from puggles and lillysmum).

Well Toby is on 1x 100mg Ph morning and night - we recently had his blood levels checked an his is on the lower level so it appears we are only just controling his epliepsy, but good news that we have room to move. I am hesitant to up his meds untill he had more siezers as they make him quite lethargic.

He had a fit this week, however this was due to my hubby being late with his medication, on the plus side he is comming out of the fits alot better. He barks ALOT but recognises who we are and isnt as freaked out as he once was. Remembering to give him the meds 12 hours a part is still difficult but we are getting their, its hard as we go out for dinner and socialise alot.

Does everyone one Phenomax buy their drugs from the vet or is their a cheaper option?

Hope your doggies are all doing well.

Melbell when KCs levels were low we had to be really careful with the timing of her meds. We ended up putting them up a bit as she had a few seizures just before her dose was due.

How old is Toby and how much does he weigh? When KC first started on Pb she was on 30mg, 11kg and 20 months old, she was very lethargic on that dose. She had a couple of years meds/seizure-free and in 10 months since she started seizing again she has gone up to 45mg but weighs only 1kg more, and you would never know she is on meds. Not sure why this is.

We get Pb from the vet but he will only give us 3 months at a time, old vet in 2004 gave us 500 pills which lasted I think 8 months until we weaned her off them. I also noticed we were charged $30 for the 3 months of 30mg and $30 for the 3 months of 15mg!!! Next time will save money and get all 30s!

I have no idea what I pay for Monte's meds.... he is currently on the brand 'Phenomav' (30mg) and we also have him on 'Epibrom' (I think this is the one..). His medical costs are just ongoing as he always seems to be in strife these days medically

Monte has had his moments lately the poor guy. One thing I am enjoying is that he has not clustered at all this year! All his seizures are focals or single tonic/clonics. His seizures are curently happening almost weekly but we have re-arranged his meds quite considerably after his bromism and it could be because of this. We may need to adjust them again if he continues to have the seizures so frequently though.

I buy mine from the Vet but I have a deal with them. Perhaps speak to your Vet and see if you can get the drugs at a reduced rate.

Toby is nearly 4 (althought acts like a 6 month old!) and is about 36kgs. He hasnt had any fits in nearly a week now so fingers crossed it was just hubbys slackness with his meds that threw out his levels. He isnt so bad now but when he was first on the Pb he was very lethargic. I asked our vet and she likened it to alchol in humans - when you first start drinking you only need 2 drinks to be drunk but the more you drink the more you need to get drunk and start to feel the affects. She must have been right as he isnt too bad atm.

Poor bubba, some dogs seem to have the worst luck - we have one of those too. But you keep loving them and hoping for a miracle cure, there are so many times I have thought "I cant do this any more" but somehow the next day things dont seem so bad.

Thanks I might have a word with them next time. Its not overly expensive but every little bit helps, plus I remember when Toby was on Prozac for his anti-social behaviour towards other dogs it was alot cheaper to buy it from the chemist with a script from the vet than to buy from the vet direct.
