Im getting a new CKCS puppy early next year and the more I read about agility training the more interested Im becoming. Im just wondering if this breed is suitable. I have read they are easy to train and are fast learners. Also if someone could suggest a good training school in the Brisbane area, preferable inner northern suburbs. Thanks

At the sydney pet and animal expo last weekend they had a toy poodle and a toy poodle X JRT doing agility and they were great about it. Any breed can enter just as long as your dog is motivated and you're willing to put the hard work in. Also the dogs are grouped by size so they arent disadvantaged when it comes to competing.

BrissyGal, Im not sure if Val Bonnie does agility training, but you can contact her on [email protected] or (07) 3300 2959 to ask. She is at the Gap.

Many of the obedience clubs run agility training as well as standard obedience, look in your Dog World at affiliated clubs & you should find some. I'm not sure exactly where in inner north you are, but Metro might be your closest - they are at Zillmere/Chermside.

Apart from that there are some specialist clubs that teach just agility like BAD Club (Brisbane Agility Dog) which trains at Carina & one out at Ipswich (name escapes me just now). BAD starts you off in a beginners course which runs for 8 weeks, then you can attend their classes which start at novice level & run up to advanced. They clicker train the obstacles, MrD & I are ging to attend their beginners course in Feb next year.

Im sure that there are probably others on the northside too, someone else may have details of them  .

Any dog is suited to agility, but just be aware that young pups shouldn't jump hurdles until they are at least 18 months old, so that they don't damage their joints. Apart from that, have fun :D

Definately wont start the jumps too early, will just have to work on the lighter stuff until then!

Zillmere/Chermside area is only about 5-10minutes away so that could be the best place to start out, thanks!

Yes I had heard that there wasnt going to be the expo next year due to not having a suitable venue to have it in.

Oh no! Ive been really looking forward to it, especially after reading the thread about the Sydney one, sounded great! :D

THANKS everyone for all your help

You little CKCS will do just fine in agility. One of the top agility and jumping dogs in Queensland is a CKCS! He's a great little man. Really loves it when people clap him hehe. As people have said previously, most clubs wont let you start jumping them until they are around 15 months of age, but theres heaps of other stuff they can learn, like the weaving poles and tunnels. Its a great sport, and the dogs love it. Have fun!
