4 Paws
Hi, does any one know of a shampoo suitable for use in a hydrobath for getting oil and grease out of a white bull terrier? This is a clients dog and it goes to work with him each day and lays around in the grease and oil and is totally black each time i go to wash him.I am currently using Groomer Edge Alpha White shampoo and a LOT of elbow grease, scrubbing him with a zoom groom and shampoo poured onto his coat, not just in the hydrobath. Seems to take for ages and a few loads of water to get him looking half decent. Told owner we need to spray him with some pre -wash laundry spray cheers Julie
dogcop
Often thought of trying the mechanics hand cleaner for this type of job, but don't think the yellow stuff with the scrubbers in it would be suitable but it may well work. then back it up with normal wash proceedure and products. ellz
Dawn Dishwashing Liquid is excellent for removing grease and oil but of course it wouldn't be suitable for a hydrobath because it foams up too much. Same with Sards Wondersoap which I also recommend for stain removal. Could you give him a pre-bath with the Dawn or Sards and then follow up with a hydrobath wash with your normal whitening shampoo? indi_dog
lol I had the same problems getting engine grease out of Indi's coat. I used Sard Wonder Soap on the grotty bits, which seemed to work better than her normal shampoo.
ReXy
id go with the sards.. or plain old martha gardners wool wash.. used to use it on the horse.and have done on dogs. and also your whitening shampoos, like glowhite etc..
4 Paws
o.k is there an alternative to Dawn dishwashing detergent.I've been looking for it at coles, woolies and iga but can't find it cheers Julie
ellz
Any of the high-quality green dishwashing liquids should do the trick.
morgan
There is no detergent on the market as good as Dawn, and this is no longer imported. I have 3 bottles left of it, and use them only when necessary! All the wildlife rescuers used it to get oil off birds after oilspills, and specially imported it before it was first sold here. Animal House have a great stain remover which takes grease off white bullies just with wiping - no nasty chemicals in it either.
kobblyness
I used to use morning fresh dishwashing liquid on our horses. It worked a treat in getting the white socks back to white.
ellz
Yep, I've stockpiled my Dawn as well. When Coles had its sell-out I went manic and bought as many as I could afford. I have found though that the better quality green liquids, whilst not as effective, generally do the trick but may require more than one attempt. 4 Paws
thanks for the suggestions. Washed the dog yesterday and used the sards wonder soap as a pre wash than used the regular Groomers Edge Alpha White shampoo in the hydrobath. He came up great with a lot less scrubbing.Have told owners to keep an eye on him to see if there is any reaction to the sards, fingers crossed there won't be as it certainley made my job a lot easier. cheers Julie
Clyde
Aswell as the other suggested cleansers I would rub through some Aloveen Leave In conditioner after his wash. Aside from helping to replenish his skin after all the stripping from his scrub, the Aloveen creates a protective barrier and stops the dirt/grease sticking to their coat so much...making it easier for next wash. Makes for a good deoderiser too.
dogcop
Just a note if a product foams up too much in the hydrobath pop a dash of vinegar in the water this will defoam it.
4 Paws
thnaks for the tips guys. I did actually pop some aloveen conditioner in his coat,so hopefully that will help. I didn't actually run the hydrobath too much with the sards in.I really just wet him down with the water in the hydrobath ,than rubbed the soap in and than rinsed off and out the plug.I think with him having so much oil etc on his coat it kind off stoped it foaming up for the little while i did actually run it,just rewetting him really thanks again Julie
nobul
From experience and filthy dogs that are also show dogs LOL. I use dishwashing liquid and wondersoap BUT as Bull Terriers can be prone to skin conditions ALWAYS use something free from chemicals after. 4 Paws
Update-just saw the owner of the dog as just sold him a bag of Nutro and all is well,no itchiness or any other problems from using the sards so looks as though it has done the trick ;) thanks Julie
