cassie Posted October 23, 2006 Share Posted October 23, 2006 Hi to all you Nutro lovers! ;) I just got sent some samples of this great food today, (thanks Saggitarian!), and I must say I am very impressed by it. Zephyr LOVED the smell of it, he practically ripped the samples out of my hand before I had a chance to read the info on them properly! And he gobbled down his dinner rather quickly, which is nice to see as usually he's not a hugely keen eater. It's so annoying that nowhere here in SA stocks Nutro, but I am so pleased by it that I'm thinking of ordering it from interstate, as the freight charges aren't all that expensive. Just wondering HOW MUCH of this food I would need to feed Zephyr on? He is currently on ProPlan, and eats roughly about 400-450g a day. Have people found in the past that you tend to feed your dogs less Nutro than you would other foods? Or is it about the same? Just trying to work out how long the bags will last me, and so how affordable it is. Also, it will probably work out cheaper if I feed him a combination of Nutro and ProPlan, is this a good idea or not? For anyone who doesn't know, Zephyr is a male Bernese Mountain Dog, turning two in December. I like the sound of the Adult Large Breed Lamb and Rice one the best, anyone have any other preferences for their large breed dogs? Thanks a bunch! ShesaLikeableBiBear Posted October 23, 2006 Share Posted October 23, 2006 NOT a good idea to mix the food, if you have proplan finish it off first. You will feed according to weight of your dog. As a guideline a friend has her 23 kg dog on Lamb and Rice and a 15kg bags lasts four months. Large Breed comes in: Large Breed Maintenance which is Chicken; Lamb and Rice, Puppy and Senior. Norskgra Posted October 23, 2006 Share Posted October 23, 2006 I know my dogs aren't large breeds but my male almost fallls into a large breed for food. They eat less of Nutro than any other food. I also wouldn't mix it with other dries. A large bag lasts us upward of 6 weeks to feed 4 dogs and that includes an Afghan. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

HuntinHound Posted October 24, 2006 Share Posted October 24, 2006 Just another plug for Nutro My guys have been fed Nutro for just over 3.5yrs now and haven't looked better, we have a customer who moved from England to Perth (WA) and we send her food every couple of months - she also wouldn't feed anything else & her dog has been eating Nutro for all of his 9yrs. I was transferring a couple of bags into containers last night and one of our cats jumped up and grabbed some of the Chicken and Rice. He loved it too. My 26kg GSD x who is abnormally hyperactive and impossible to keep weight on eats about 600g a day :D And my little 5kg Terrier x eats about 150g a day. Tis a brilliant food. I'm happy with it. Thanks Piximatosis for those food quantities too Hi Cassie, Start introducing a little of the Nutro when your other bag is getting low, it's a good idea to ease any diet changes in gradually. making a wholesale change can cause tummy upsets, blending in a little more of the new food over a number of days is the way to go. I'm getting some Nutro samples to try as well (thanks Sagittarian) Cheers, Corine Edited for spelling error. I plan to order the Nutro when my current bag has about a third left in it, so we can make the change gradually, and also allow for however long it will take for the Nutro to get here from interstate! We [MDBA] are currently collecting digestibility figures and doing digestibility testing which shows clearly that price isnt a very good indicator of what going in stays in and is used by the body .Ingredients arent always a good indicator either. Wonder why digestibility figures dont show on any of the dog food labels? Its possible to make a food more digestible by using rice as a primary grain source ,it seems ,even though the parts of the rice plant used is normally used in cat litter. Some super premium foods split ingredients to make it look like there is more of one food than another when in fact there is as much grain to ratio of meat in cheaper brands . Just because meat is written up as the first ingredient thats definitely no indication that you get more meat in one than you do in any other. There's is no measurement of how much of each ingredient is in each batch so some may only have a pinch and still be listed .There is no guarantee that what ingredients go in are any better than cardboard when they come out of the bag which is demonstrated by the vast difference between ingredients listed as what goes in and the guaranteed analysis shown on the bags . For example vitamin B's may go in but there is no hint that this is still in it when it is fed to a dog.That may have something to do with vitamin B's being destroyed by heat and its pretty hard to imagine that any commercial dog food is produced without heat. Regardless of Ingredients, this doesnt necessarily mean quality or that every bit of them isnt destroyed in the processing or storage . So you may get what you pay for with Nutro but price and ingredients lists dont necessarily tell someone they are getting any better or that they will be getting what they pay for. I have Atlas on Nutro and LOVE it - nothing has worked as well for him then this - but if it was pal or something that i got this good result from, i would have stuck with it! I am giving another nurto a go with Kaos, but if i cant get weight on her with it- i will be going back to one of the cheaper brands.
