Fleas On 5 Week Old Puppy..what Can I Do?

The mother hasn't been with her owner since she had the pups. She has been with the owners brother, because the owner had to stay with the inlaws for a while until their house was ready.

She had no idea the pups and mother were in this state! The other pup is safe, and she is getting the mother today, and taking her straight to the vet to make sure she is ok, and treat her if need be.

Sorry if you don't like what I am about to say but...I find it hard to believe the owner didn't know the condition of the mother and pups. If she really didn't know then she just didn't care. Who on this earth has a litter and doesn't keep an eye on it? Oh yes, back yard breeding puppy farmers who have absolutely no idea and don't give a fig about dogs. Lets all just go and let our dogs mate with whatever they want and when they have the pups, probably out in the dirt is the best place, give them to someone else to 'care' for (and I use the word 'care' very loosely) and not check on them at all cause we don't care about them.:) :D :p

HI

I followed to thread you made about your little pup on EB forum and Im glad you have came here to get advice from here, this is a great place to learn heaps of information on caring for your little darling . Every one on this forum is very passionate about dogs so hearing about your friends neglect and careless ways truly disgusts us. Just a couple of questions.

How commited is your friend to her dog.

Is she is very ignorant? or really doesnt give a hoot about the condition of her dog?

does she have the time and money to care for its well being? would she be interested in learning about responsible dog ownership? since she didint sell the pups, she is not interested in making money, so why did she breed?.

If you dont think she is truly able to care for this poor dogs needs, proper health care and desexing, feeding ect. then I would strongly advice you to encourage her to surrender the dog to the RSPCA. Hopefully the dog would be able to be rehomed.

If you think your friend is just ingorant and naive, and does love to dog and has good intentions, perhaps point her in the direction of this forum so she can be educated about responsible dog ownership. I remember reading on your EB thread that she wants to breed more in the future :D . Surely this experience shows why dog breed should be left to the professionals?

Im so glad that the other pup has found a loving home.

Remember with your pup, early socialisation is a MUST with a pup that leaves its mother and litter mates so young.

its such a gorgeous puppy!

glad to see her safe, hope the mother is safe too. Theres a million and one things wrong with this whole situation. The pups shouldnt have been born in the first place...not yet not to a mother that young. Its a miracle they all survived

Thanks so much for all your help and info..

The other pup has been checked over by the vet, and sprayed for fleas, she didn't have anywhere near as bad as 'Dora' did, but then the other puppy has short hair, and Dora's hair is long. She has gone to her new home today, with a loving lady looking for a companion after the loss of her husband.

I went and saw my friend yesterday, and she is taking her dog (the mother) to the vets today, to get checked over, and be treated for fleas/worms if need be.

My friend really really does love her dogs (she has 2)...I honestly think that she thinks that a female is a 'better' dog if they are allowed to have a litter or 2 before desexing...To be honest, I always believed the same thing until we started looking into getting a pup/dog, and I started reading the forums here. I have told her about this site, and she is going to come and check it all out....

With the state of the Mum and the puppies, I realise that there is no excuse at all, but I think because the dogs were at her brothers while she and her family were at the inlaws, and she doesn't drive and has to rely on lifts to go and see them, and she 'assumed' that her brother loved the animals as much as she does, is why they ended up in such a state.

She was in tears yesterday when I told her about the number of fleas Dora had on her, and that they were making nests in her neck, and that she would have died if I hadn't have taken her on Saturday.

Please don't think that she is seriously neglecting her dogs, she totally is not that type of person...Her dogs live inside at her house, one on each of her boy's beds, they are loved, played with, excersised, cuddled, I think she is just a little bit uneducated about the pro's and cons of breeding....I know that she was so excited when these pup's were born because she could give someone else the opportunity to have a loving dog just like she does.

I'll be sure to keep you all updated about Dora's progress....She is going great at the moment, she never needs to use her legs, the kids love her so much...

Could you please tell this lady about all the poor little pups who are being killed at the pounds because there are no homes available for them.

People have plenty of opportunity of rescuing a pup from the pound and having a dog to love without people who know nothing about breeding allowing their dogs to breed.

Dogs are not in short supply. There are too many dogs and too much BYB going on. I don't think I have ever seen pounds and shelters so full as they are right now.

It's good to see that these pups have found good homes but please ask the owner to desex her dog so this doesn't happen again.

Well said, Anne. This woman, no matter how well-intentioned, needs to get her bitch speyed ASAP. And if she perhaps feels that it's the wrong thing to do to her lovely dog, then she needs to visit local pounds so she can see for herself just how many "loving dogs" end up being killed b/c nobody wants them. :(

We who volunteer to save dogs lives do so b/c we love dogs...we want them to have another chance...we get them desexed so the dogs we rescue aren't contributing further to the unwanted dog problem...we home them to responsible people...we aim to educate others about the benefits of desexing and responsible ownership...we aim to raise awareness about unwanted dogs in the wider community...and all the while there are people out there who think (wrongly) that a bitch has to have a litter to make it a better animal. :o
