spoilt lab lives here Posted October 19, 2006 Share Posted October 19, 2006 (edited) Hi everyone I am going away for a weekend with my family and Ramses is coming We are going into what ive been told as a 'high tick area' and was wondering appart from using tick treatments before and after if i do come across a tick on him how do i successfully remove the whole tick? I do not leave in a tick area so i have never come across removing a tick before so this is new to me ETA What treatment do you recommend that id be able to put on before and after the w/e away? tree Posted October 19, 2006 Share Posted October 19, 2006 (edited) put a tick collar on him. If he get's a tick just put a little bit of alcohol on it and the tick should drop off. Don't just pull it off or you could leave the head in your dog and inadvertantly squeeze the poison from the tick into him. There are tick hooks you can buy that dig in and grab the head of a tick. Supermum Posted October 19, 2006 Share Posted October 19, 2006 My vet recommends using a tick collar as well as frontline or whatever tick treatment - doubling up is a good idea he feels. You'll also need to check your dog throughly every day for ticks while you're away but also for a few weeks after returning. It might seem like hard work, but nothings harder than finding a tick when it's started to do its work. Don't forget to look in their ears and around the paws, in between the pads too. Scarlet Posted October 19, 2006 Share Posted October 19, 2006 I was told by an old bushy to spray fly spray or metho onto the tick-wait a minute or two and then gently lever it off. I have never asked a vet about this and wonder if anyone else uses this. I prefer to use the metho and the fly spray only when I'm without metho. Then I watch the dog like a hawke for the next 12 hrs or so and if he was to be wobbly in the legs would take him to the vet. Its never got that far. They shaved the dog with still no luck and eventually found the tick on the root of its mouth. spoilt lab lives here Posted October 20, 2006 Author Share Posted October 20, 2006 Hopefully i wont have to be pulling tick out of him I will be getting him a tick collar and usinf either advantix or advantage, with the advantage/ix should i use before we go say on thursday (we leave friday night) and then when we come back on monday (only staying for the weekend) or should the treatments and the collar be alright? Could be the difference between life and death if the tick is the paralysis type. I thought the solution was to get tweezers and remove them. Kellbelle Posted October 21, 2006 Share Posted October 21, 2006 Hi, we've used a combination of Frontline and a 'Killtix' collar on our two dogs when living in Townsville, Qld. We found a topical application plus a collar necessary as it is hard to keep our dogs out of water. WARNING always read the labels. For example, Frontline states it is only effective against paralysis ticks for the first two weeks after treatment. (Meaning during tick season you have to reapply every fortnight- EXPENSIVE but worth it!!) Also some treatments can not be used with others and they don't refer to brand names but the leading chemicals. We had friends tell us they found Advantage useless in our area so we always used Frontline?? Perhaps check with a local vet of the area you are travelling into & they will let you know what tick prevention works best in that area. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

(Like fleas they may latch on then die so checking for ticks is still essential). Other things tthat help include making sure your dog doesn't burrow into garden beds/ ground to sleep/snooze as the ticks come out (especially after rain) in the humid wet season. Beds made from hession or shade cloth that sit the dog up off the ground are really good. Try to keep your dog in the same locality if possible. We found in Townsville some areas always had tick problems, but two streets away they might have never had a tick problem. Christina77 Posted October 21, 2006 Share Posted October 21, 2006 (edited) I use Frontline Plus for ticks but for Paralysis ticks you need to re-apply it every 14 days ( our vet recommended 12 days ) Vet recommended against Adavantix because we have a cat and we aren't able to keep them seperate for at least 24 hours after applying it to the dog ( poisenous to cat) Still check your pets x 2 a day , I make it a habit to run my hands over my dog many times a day , she's used to me poking around in her ears as well as toes and mouth , bum area etc . I have removed ticks by spraying Aeroguard on them and then pulling them off with tweezers making sure you get right in front of the head so it comes out completely , they leave a nasty crater wound . Then a vet check imo is a must , a dog migh not show symptoms but that can still happen for 48 hours AFTER the removal of the tick. and check yourself as well , they can attach to humans and make you very ill :cool: Edited October 21, 2006 by Christina77 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

suki's mum Posted October 21, 2006 Share Posted October 21, 2006 Also keep in mind that a tick can lay dormate for up to 2 weeks on dog before they latch on. I have just learnt this, as my Silky got a paraysis tick on her on sunday, and we are in a low tick area. Go figure!!!!!!
