phantompark
Thanks for you help. I have been giving one egg a day to my 2. I was just informed though by the breeder that I am going through that the yolk should only be fed due to if you feed both of them together they cancel each other out?? I tried getting them to eat the shell, but i think I may need to crush it up a bit more. Cheers
doorg
Was told by our breeder only 2 raw ones a week, but if they are cooked you can give them more, and every day
dougie
I have always been under the impression that the white of the egg destroys the biotin in the body, and should only be given to dogs if it is lightly cooked, raw yolks are fine................am I misinformed?Trish you are not misinformed.... hard boiled & mashed...shells & all is the way to go. Miranda
I have always been under the impression that the white of the egg destroys the biotin in the body, and should only be given to dogs if it is lightly cooked, raw yolks are fine................am I misinformed? Trish you are not misinformed.... hard boiled & mashed...shells & all is the way to go. I'm afraid that you are both misinformed. Avidin is a glycoprotein found in egg whites which binds to biotin (one of the B vitamins, B7) making it unavailable to the body. However egg yolk is so rich in biotin that it compensates for the amount affected by the avidin. You would have to eat many raw eggs over many months before a biotin deficiency would become evident, to create an acute deficiency in a short period of time a human would have to consume 24 raw egg whites a day. Therefore a raw egg given a couple of times a week is not going to negatively affect your dog in any way whatsoever.
Mornir
For doggies that don't eat the shell: crush up the shells and bake them in hot oven for 10 minutes and then crush it to a powder, or but the shell in the blender and then mix the shell with their food
bridgie_cat
We used to feed raw mixed with milk to the cats and dogs just randomly (no set amt each week...) but recently I have just been feeding Lana the yolk.
flycow
Mine ate birds eggs as well, dropped from the nests in my yard so she never lag the nutrience. i've been feeding both soft boiled or raw once to twice a week since Diva's little. Usually I give the shell as well and crushed them with the rest. Now if I can only get her to digest the shells properly. They usually come right out the other end, I can see the bits in the poo
arby
speaking of eggs...we have an avary with japanese quails in it. Dad was cleaning it out today and we had 5 fresh laid quail eggs. In the 8 meters walking back to the house my Lab X wouldnt let me past him unless he got to eat one of the eggs!!! He was drooling at the site of them. So i obliged made him sit, gave him one tiny little egg...he was so proud of himself for gettin the little treat!

bilby
Miranda, you put it so well. Best guide for any food is Would this be part of a canine's natural diet ? How would he eat it in the wild ? There are lots of introduced foods that wouldn't normally be part of the wild diet, but which are very beneficial in compensating for the changes we have brought to the domestic dog... Eggs are part of their natural scavenging diet.
Ceilidh
I just crack the egg slightly and sit it on top of their dinner. They all just eat around it then eat the egg last, shell and all. They get an egg once or twice a week, depends on how the chooks are laying.
