I have tried distraction, tying her up, leash training and treats when she is good. It doesnt matter what i do she know it makes me mad but still cannot control herself. All her other disciplines are good, she is well mannered and loving but.... I DONT KNOW HOW TO MAKE HER STOP!!! HELP ME I AM STARTING TO DISLIKE HER. I have had intensive training classes with her (was Very dominant) and had good results but now i need to know how to stop this behaviour. Thanks :)

my brothers dog cries, 24/7

shes about a year old now I think?

she is well looked after, has a friend (my parents 3 year old maltese x shih tsu)

but she just cries all day, every day..

I walk her all the time (even though she isnt my dog and i dont really like her)

shes fed well, has LOTS of toys... she just cries..

and then she'll just lick everything and anything, even when she is sitting away from you, she'll lick the air..

shes NOT trained at all, she sits, and shakes, otherwise she barks at anything that walks past our house, she pee's herself when guests come over, she doesnt really understand the word "no" and she chews EVERYTHING..

shes not my dog, but it's starting to become my responcibility..

I'm going to be getting myself a puppy in a week or so, and I'll be training my dog every day (obviously only like 5-10 mins at a time)

my brother brought her for his girlfriend that lives with us, but they dont train it, barely walk it, and never tell it off :mad

I hope my puppy doesnt become like my brothers dog..

shes a Maltese X West Highland X something tall? :p

sorry to steal your thread, but like you - i'm at my wits end too :(

What breed of dog is she? Some breeds whinge...ahem, TangerineDream looks over shoulder fondly at GSP who doesn't whinge while he's asleep  Dobes don't whinge.....so knowing the breed type may help solve the problem (or at least explain it)

WELL WOULDNT YOU KNOW IT ... LEXY IS A DOBE!!! HELP ME, I HAVE AN EXCEPTION!!!!

:mad Ok then, the lines that I had didn't whinge....... :(

This is something that I try with Tango, and it seems to be working....I ignore him, I turn and walk away, I hum to myself (usually confuses him so he shuts up) - the more I responded to the whinging the more he whinged.....it drove me insane for a few weeks, but he finally worked out that if he was whinging I would refuse to talk to him, pat him, feed him, walk him or in fact do anything with him.........I even got to the stage of standing next to the front door with the lead staring into space waiting for the whinging to stop - the minute he stopped on went the collar - took a while and I had to be consistent...but it has worked.....

My Shar Pei male used to whinge, tried everything, nothing worked. Then brought a water pistol, when he whinges I spray him, he shuts up, now if he whinges I pick up the water pistol and he shuts up

It worked for me and it is the only thing that works

Maybe you need to calm down, relax, take a step back. Clear yourself first then deal with the dog. Yes its frustrating but you will destroy your relationship with the dog if every time you look at her you upset yourself.

Your pup whines while you are angry at it - its nervous! Getting upset, tying it up etc will not stop this. Have you gotten the dog vet checked for chronic pain? What are the lines like - working lines/show lines, do any other relatives show anxiety problems, high drive etc?

A dobey is a high drive breed and will whine when anxious. I own a Belgian Malinois and this thing whines like the proverbial, but its just her (trust me, I want to open the car door and push her out when we go for long drives). I learned to live with it and give her an outlet for all that penned up energy through play.

You are trying to suppress her drive and anxiety so she whines. A bit of leash work and a couple of treats is not enough to shut up an animal like this. Grab an old rag and start running round the backyard like a loony. Make her chase you, get her attention by flapping it about and making happy noises - great exercise for both of you! Even ball on a bungee cord, less effort for you but keep it moving. Also, get a word to the noise. If she whines try and make her bark, jump about and excite her when she barks go "GEBLAUT - GOOD GIRL!!!!!" heaps of praise! Make everything fun, then when she's barking say 'ENOUGH" not too roughly and get her to sit. Chuck her a toy. Teach her this word means settle and shut up!

Give this a go. Most of all have patience, some dogs are just like this but there are ways and means. Most of all you have to calm down yourself because an anxious dog will become more nervous around an owner that gives out negativity.

Michael is a whinger. Michael is also a spoiled brat. Michael has learned that the voice of God (spray bottle) isn't much fun and has now learned to hold his whinges for those times when he really needs them.

hey minnie, don't worry, whinger dogs has always been around so I heard. And from this thread it seems to be true. Anyway my pup is a big whinger too, she whinge from getting bored, not getting the things she want, food stuck in the kong etc. I ignored her, it's highly irritating but if she get louder I'd scold her and leave the room. She improves only that little but now she's getting older I think she's growing out of it, only a teenie whinge when she's really in a bad mood. Dog has it's days too.

WELL WOULDNT YOU KNOW IT ... LEXY IS A DOBE!!! HELP ME, I HAVE AN EXCEPTION!!!!

Hi Minnie

I really feel for you. My Dobe was so shocking that my first post on DOL was about his winging. See (noisey doberman post on the training/obediance). There are some good constructive tips from fellow Dobe owners.

My best form of defence was to ignore it. The more I gave him attention the quicker he caught on that all he had to do was winge and yep - mummy came to the party.

Very painful for a few weeks but has worked to some degree. Our house and neighbourhood are no longer being woken up by the sound of him winging at 5am because he was awake and wanted attention.

He is a fair bit better, still has the odd winge when he isnt getting his own way - meaning he is not glued to my side every waking moment.

I used to own a very talkative Staffy but she passed away 2 years ago. We got a purebreed GSD in Feb and when I took her for her vacs the vet actually commented on the fact that my GSD is noisier than the staffy ever was :) . We had to stop letting her in the house in the morning for her breakfast because she was waking the kids constantly lol. I am sure the neighbours think we are doing awful things to her because of the high pitched arooooooooo.

one of my puppy girls is a complete whinger - ive never known anything like it!! i had 2 puppies from the same litter - long story - both treated the same way as i have before with my boy (who doesnt whinge) all the tactics crated never go to when crying etc etc etc

but she just wouldnt stop, she had canine company 24/7 - we were actually choosing which of the 2 puppies to keep - she went back to the breeder yesterday :) sorry to see her leave but my house is now peaceful

Sorry really not much help at all - i guess some dogs are just whingers!

Maybe speak to steve at K9Force and see what he suggests he can sort anything out! :D

In my experience some dogs ARE born whingers and it is in the general make up of the dog.

Probably caused by stress and stress tolerance levels vary from dog to dog.

As an easy fix, I have seen the problem alleviated by adding the companionship of another dog.

If this is not an option then the first step would be for you, the owner, to accept that the dog will probably whinge for at least a month. Once you have accepted that then your stress levels should go down and you can start to work on the problem.

Do not reward the whinging by giving it your attention in any way. Try the water bottle trick, see if it works for you. Treat the whinging with ignore, turn your back on your dog if it demands attention. Only approach it when it is quiet (not easy I know).

Remember going mad on your dog, ranting and raving, etc. is attention, even if it is punishment it is still seen by some dogs as being attention and better than being ignored! :)
