KitKat Posted September 19, 2006 Share Posted September 19, 2006 Tracking down types of prong collars recently but not having much luck...seems no one carries the ones with the quick snap release - (so you don't have to peel apart the prongs to put the collar on and off). Anyway...one place told me that they were out of pinch collars all together (didn't stock the quick release one anyway) but they were waiting for their new type to come in. These 'new' ones have a metal plate cover across the back of each prong and apparently looks like a 'metal plate collar' rather then a normal prong. I did check out the sprenger site and they had some covers that fit to the prong but not as was described to me. So...anyone know what was meant? kinda curious now! Aaahhh (sigh). Nothing nicer than a well-worked/used prong. The links soften with use. I admit to the difficulties of sizing and fitting a prong (especially a newish one) to a dog that is all over the place. Not that I do that here anymore. :D Ah ah Not here in Victoria. This is one of the other type they do... And here is that one with the cover on it... You'd never know it was a prong once on! But they do covers for each type of prong they offer. The only time my dogs complain about having a prong on is when I'm trying to take it off them - they're obviously meant for big man hands to undo! KitKat Posted September 19, 2006 Author Share Posted September 19, 2006 It's a problem ordering them into the country apparently - some places will apparently break them up and send them in a few separate packages...i don't know. But because it's considered a restricted item by Customs...they usually nab them as they hit the country. But you can order them from some places within Aus which isn't a major problem. It's just a matter of finding the type you like - i've been quoted up to a $100 including postage from within Aus for one standard prong collar... KitKat Posted September 19, 2006 Author Share Posted September 19, 2006 From whay i understand...for the three martingale types there isn't much difference...the two quick snaps and the standard - i like the quick snap that doesn't look like a dog clip as i've seen it in the 'flesh' as it were and it stands up to a pretty tough dog safely. Just don't like the look of the dog clip one...and the standard one makes my woosy widdle fingers ache putting it on and off :D (not really but it can be fiddly whereas the quick snap solves the problem) The ones that look like a normal collar are incredibly interesting tho...would be interested in hearing if anyone has used one? or what people think? Is that just a personal preference, K9 .... or is there a particular reason/benefit it has over the others? - compared to the model in the second photo? Oops! Forget that question .... The difference (from what I can tell) in the first two is the connection piece. The second one is a snap hook type ... the first one has a connection that is, IMO, less likely to accidentally release. MonElite Posted September 20, 2006 Share Posted September 20, 2006 I have tried the one in pic nr 2 the little release on the snap catches on the clip of the lead and accidently releases the collar completly off the dog. I certainly dont recomend that type. The 3 and 4 dont have the "checking" ability, the only one worth getting is nr and now you know where to get it from. MonElite Posted September 20, 2006 Share Posted September 20, 2006 Oh and there are some plastic ones I think american made and they dont look like prongs on the outside as the plastic is kind off solid plate for each link, but they interlock with plastic as well and will unclip if not carefull. It's the type you have to undo the links to get off and on and it drives me insane! You must be supposed to have big strong man hands to do it, and it doesn't help when it's attached to a wriggling 30 kg Doberman either! Out of curiosity, what are you supposed to do when you're dog still pulls on a prong?? I don't want to use it like a check chain, or are you supposed to give a correction with it?? My older dobe still pulls me along happily in the prong which to me is actually proof they don't actually hurt!! He doesn't pull AS much as he does in a flat collar, but still enough to be annoying! The quick release are easier to fit, & they come off in a millisecond... Yes you need a method, or the dog will learn to cope with the prong...
