X-pen Or Crate?

I'm hopefully getting a puppy in January 07 and I've been doing a lot of research on breeds, puppies, everything! I just was wondering if anyone had any advice?

What should I get, an x-pen or a crate?

I live in a very open house with hardly any boundaries and no 'safe' room for the puppy. For that reason an x-pen seems like a good choice. But I also want to use a crate/x-pen for housetraining and maybe that can't be done with an x-pen?

Also I'm getting a cavalier puppy

I recommend the crate 100%. It made house training a breeze and I can crate him when I need to leave the house for short periods of time and i know he is safe.

Use a crate for sleeping and a safe haven but I bought a plastic baby playpen that links together so you can use it to barricade off some rooms - like those with carpet.

Both if you can stretch funds that far, but if it comes down to it, the crate would be first choice.

You can put them in the car for travel, take it on holidays or to other houses etc and the dog will still have his familiar "den", and its much more reliable at keeping pups and dogs out of trouble. My pups could climb our small pen at 9 weeks, and the large one at 12 weeks.
