Dog Dance Classes

 Share

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I have been searching the internet all night and I came across your forum. My mother has a Sheltie and has been doing obedience classes with her for about 1 year. My mother would like to do dog dancing with her baby girl. I have been searching all night, but can't seem to locate clubs that do this.

We are located in the South Eastern suburbs of Melbourne. Can anyone please help with clubs that do this.

Many thanks in advance.

Panda has done this in NZ, he has been on 60 minutes :D His music was Hillbilly Rock Hillbilly Roll.

It is also known as Canine Freestyle, and Heelwork to Music.

Use the search field here and type in Dancing with Dogs. shoemonster, bloss344 and Tolietduck are all in Victoria and have some form of participation.

The following is from Erny and was in a previous posting.

"Try contacting Sue Cordwell. She organised a "Canine Freestyle Seminar with Caroline Scott last March, and if I recall correctly, she and some others might have started up a "Freestyle Dancing Club" - albeit in Victoria. However, she might have some knowledge of contacts/clubs in your area. Sorry - that's the best I can do. Hope it pays off. Email address: [email protected]"

Also go into www.dogpatch.org and use the quickjump menu to find a list of links on Musical Freestyle.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

We did our routine (a few little tricks with heeling) last night and Molly did very well (however I got lost a few times hahaha) but it was great fun

There is also a yahoo group, email here: [email protected]

Wow! I never knew such a thing existed, thanks for posting about it. For anyone else curious, there are a few good video clips at this website http://bcfirst.com/paws/ and click on the PAWS 2 DANCE SCREENING ROOM.

Some of the teams were so good and everyone looked like they were having a lot of fun. I have to admit though that I did giggle a bit during the novice group, I can put myself in their shoes so easily!

MrsD, you wanna do it with the shelties?, LOL we may have a team. :D

Magicalthing, there is a lot of choreography (cant spell for peanuts  ), but www.dogpatch.org, links will help you.

If in a team situation, then you need to think about not just the movements which you can teach the dogs, but also the music which will suit. e.g. bigger dogs such as a rotty, saint bernard etc will need music that is relatively slow like a waltz whereas a sheltie needs something faster.

When training Panda we also used Herb Alpert (LOL your Mum would possibly know), Walk in the Black Forest etc.

MrsD, in the summer, when we can do it indoors when Lure and Herding and conformation clases are over.

Im already picking music & thinking up moves & I dont even know how to teach any of them  .

Gotta go organise dinner cos I have a friend coming over, but you know where my mind will be & what it wil be doing :rofl: .

Thanks everyone for all your help - I have passed all information on to my mum.

It doesn't appear that it is as popular in Victoria as it is in some of the other states. Mum is going to get in contact with the group from Dandenong and see how it goes. Mum's dog Sasha is pretty good at pickup up new tricks and there has been heaps of information on how to start training for the different tricks.

Once again thanks for all the info.

No probs

Mrs D, I love doing it with Molly! I hadn't heard of it until a few months ago when one of the girls at obedience was showing me some tricks that her dog can do, I was impressed and she told me about freestyle

Its great because the dogs really enjoy it

MrsD am sure I mentioned it to you, I will lend you the video of Panda. :D

Mary Ray has done a demonstration, (I think using her sheltie) in the Best in Show Ring at Crufts :)

Hesa, yes you've mentioned it before a couple of times - but I still had no idea what it was! Completely clueless! Did you see the video of Richard Curtis & Jazz doing Thriller at Crufts in that link that Shoey gave? If you havent, have a look. Absolutely AWESOME!!!!!!!:thumbsup:

Shoey - so where's the video of you? Come on, dont be mean - I wanna see!!! ;)
