~Harminee~
Orlando, my OH's Sister has a pomeranian. He is desexed and almost 12 months old. He has been to puppy school but prior to that was very fearful until socialised. The first couple of meetings with her dogs and our new pup went well, but now when we and the dogs( Lilly- BC x and Gemima Papillion x Maltese) go down to visit, Orlando's get up on the lounge and won't come down. When he does he cowers with tail between his legs.Is visibly submissive. Here's the problem, Kristy doesn't want us to bring the pup down any more because of Orlandos behavioural problems, and we can't and i WON"T leave a 10 week old pup home alone for the period we need to be down town on shop days ( sometimes away from the house for 10 to 12 hours) How do I socialise Lilly with Orlando again to restore his former boistrous bouncy self?. I have thought of buying a harness and keeping her next to us on lead whist in the house and Lilly and Gemima can run around the back yard for 10 to 15 minutes between times. OR Getting a portable crate, that we take with us, and crate Lilly, but my concern is that Lilly will then feel like its her fault, and thus creating issues for Lilly. what is the best solution, Oh and Gemima and Lilly play fine. If anything Gemima( is the rougher of the 2 and when Lilly gets too rough, Gemima nips her and tells her off, so there is no issues there; HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ~Harminee~
thanks Pandii Im going to get a portable metal crate in Tuesday so before we go down to Mum's ( that where the Kristy and her dogs are) Lilly will have a chance to get use to being crated.. Its easier to crate, than to try and control a boistrous 10 week old pup on harness...........
pesh
Harminee I gather the dogs are in the car together? Is this why you want a crate? Sorry. couldn't quite understand the shopping bit, having a thickhead day.................... Slowly reintroduce the dogs, don't false them onto each other. Just let them see each other, and if one is boistrous settle them down so not to throw the more submissive one. A way is, if one is an out going pup/dog, wait till it's calm/ slightly tired (not when it is really in need of sleep, it will only make it cranky being sniffed by another dog when all it wants is sleep) and reintroduce it to the smaller/sensitive dog. Don't allow one on the lounge, as this is a dominate position and the other will be more determined to get that other dog down to his level. It has to be even playing field, so one doesn't have an advantage over the other. Another less stressful way is to walk your dogs together, they then both associate walking together as a nice time. Repitition, that what it all about. I would have your dog attend dog training, as this is great way of introducing all different breeds to your dog, and the best way to have learn to socialize. It also teaches you, and you will learn to relax, then the dog will as it is most probably feeding off you being stressed. In its' head, Mum is stressed so there must be something wrong. Hope I've made sense?????????????? Good luck..........
~Harminee~
Hey Pesh... thanks for the help here.. I also posted this in the Training section. Lilly has her crate now, and is doing great with being crated at night, and goes there to sleep. The pomeranian is my OH's sisters dog, and they only see each other say 1 x month. Have bought the crate so when we visit Kristy and Mums place, Orlando isn't fearful because Lilly is so full on and boystrous. Had a good talk to Kristy today ( Tammy satyed home and looked after our dogs, as Lilly had a sore eye from getting it scratched by the cat- saw the vet and had injection for inflamation + cream x 3 daily)) and she is good with the crate idea. Will do a trail run in the very near future.
