Puppy Vaccinations

He's had his first two shots, he just needs his rabies and last shot. Should I wait till he has had all of those shots before taking him on a walk around the neighbourhood, or can I do it now?

Normaly its 10 days from the date of the 2nd shot.

AkitaPuppy has just had his second shots (3 days ago) and he is ok to go outside for walks in 7 days. His last shot will be in 4 weeks.

I guess, like us, you are looking forward to showing them the world out there ;)

Second shots are done at 9 weeks, right? He's almost 12 weeks now, which means I can give him a walk around the neighbourhood? ;) I just don't want him to get anything..

I could be wrong, but i thought 1st shots were at 8 weeks, 2nd at 12 weeks and the last at 16 weeks.

Puppy was behind on his 2nd shot as he was still with the breeder. But our Vet tells us 10 days after the second shot is fine for walks outside.

Do you have his Med records from his breeder? that would show the date's he had them.

To be honest, i dont know if the outside world is ready for our little guy ;)

Normally its 2 weeks after their final vaccination, whenever that might be. Its just not worth the risk otherwise. ;)

In NZ we only had two vaccinations as puppies, 6 weeks and 8 weeks, but here it is three lots.

Whichever way normally 10-14 days after last vaccinations and better to be safe than sorry.

Went & got Jonty's last shot on Tuesday, the vet said 5 days! Vet before that said 7 days. Other vets say 10 days, 14 days. I wish they would make up their mind ;) .

i typed a big post about vaccs the other day, i'll find it for you

here we go:

last year in my animal care couse the vaccinations were explained to me like this...

Antibodies from the dam start to decline as they stop feeding from her (or coincidently around that age) so their first shot is given at 6 weeks, but if there antibody levels are above a certain level the shot will have no effdect, below this level the body reacts be making more antibodys and cells that remember what antibodies are needed (techinically speaking as always T-cells of something) and as with any vaccination or infection the antibody levels drop of after acouple of weeks and then the 12 week vacc is given, and if all goes well the pups antibody levels should be up to a safe level 7-10 days after that. But as before, if the antibody levels are above a certain level the shot will have no effect.

however the third (16) shot is given as a pecaution to protect if one of the shots had no effect, but otherwise has not effect on antibodies, and hence why is isn't compulary, but is recomended. as the chance of one of the first two shot not working is slim.

Still i believe we are over vaccinating, and would be much happier to do yearly antibody tests and vaccinate every 3 years or when required. But that is a nother thread.

so 99% of the time a pup is fully vaccinated be 13-14 weeks, and is safe to walk. however before that age tey are safe to meet other vaccinated dogs in areas that havern't had contact with unvaccinated dog and safe to play with other dogs of the same vaccination levels... again that still haven't had contact with vaccinated dogs.

so in theory, if one irrisponsible owner took his 10 week old pup for a walk before puppy-preshool the pup (or their shoe's) could bring in parvo spores. but that is a rist you make every day when you come home to your puppy isn't it. i mean i hardly had a chemical shower every time i came home to rid myself of parvo risk.

them again i could be wrong. (there goes any merit to my arguement)

I just got simba's 10 weeks second shots on the 27th July and the vet told me 10 days and then back again at 12 weeks for another shot

:rolleyes: Thanks guys, he had his first two shots June 28 and July 16. So one at 6 weeks and 8 [almost 9] weeks. Due for his rabies next week, and then another shot after that and we're done for [almost] a year ;)

Took him for a breif walk....most of the time he refused to walk anyways, ended up carrying him.

They are all such gorgeous pups, I'd hate to see posts about any of them gettting sick. I know it's not necessary, but for myself, would only allow them to wander out of the yard, a month after final shot, C5, which includes kennel cough in the vaccine.

(I'm guessing you'll definitely be showing these guys,as they are such stars,so the C5,would be recommended, when they'll be mixing with lots of others etc)

I chose to restrict him to my flat and the roof garden before 10 weeks, then gave him the shot. Will give him another shot (DHPPi+rabies) at 13 or 14 weeks, just to be safe and comply with the local licensing.

I take Bailey out even though he has only had his one shot because he needs to be socialised before 16 weeks. I would rather have a well socialised dog that god forbid gets sick then a completely nerotic dog that hasn't been socialised as a puppy. Having said that I don't do anything stupid. He doesn't go near dogs I don't know are healthy and fully vacced. We don't go to parks or anywhere that stray dogs could have been. We walk our street but I know that there are no other dogs (or houses) in our area. And I take him to our trainer who only trains us indoors to limit his exposure to any diseases.

Im the same as Vanessa0305, my pup has only had one shot, and i take him out on a route i know is safe, if another dog comes anywhere near Pathc, i lift him up away from him.

You have to be smart and responsable about these sorts of things. My ex had a german shepherd pup, he wasnt socialised before 16weeks and he was a nightmare around other dogs. Its so heartbreaking to have a dog you cant take out becuase your worried it will go nuts. Just be smart about it.
