Help With Squealing Toy Poodle

Hi All I need help with a 15 week old tiny toy poodle.

Up to last monday we had no problems.

Came when called, used the pet door and no accidents inside.

No unnecessary barking although she has not got a bark just a sound that I have never heard before in any of my pup.

Sleeps on my bed all night and was very good.

Monday afternoon she started going crazy, running around squealing very loud, would not come when called, wont go outside and if I go out with her she runs around the yard squealing very loud then races inside.

Messing anywhere inside.

Squeals most of the night with me getting no sleep.

Tuesday.

Taken to the vet and could not find any problems so asked another vet in the practice and again could not find any problems.

They kept her there all day and she did a number 1 and 2.

No worms and No 2 was normal.

Wednesday

Squealing all day and eating small amounts drinking during the day.

Night yelling less than monday but very loud as she sleeps under my pillow.

Thursday

Little quieter during the day and evening and hopefully tonight as I need some sleep.

Anyone with any ideas please.

Apolo

Hi apollo

Sounds like she needs a time out / relaxing safe place like a mini crate. I find my dogs feel much safer enclosed in a crate. Have you tried this??

Have a look at the crate training articles, heaps of them in the history.

Let me know how it goes :)

Hi BellasPerson

I have tried the crate and all we had was a louder screaming.

We cant have the extra noise here as the neighbours are a pain in the but and contact the council and we get visits from the animal tean.

She used to love the crate as we went to the vet in the crate every trip but now the only place where she is a little quieter is the cane basket under my computer table.

I had a much better sleep last night (thank goodness).

We have had a run around the back yard this morning and a number 1 so I will now wait for the number 2.

Some sort of temporary bowel blockage? :) ie. really hurt to go to the toilet at the time??

Not diagnosing here but a friend's Amstaff would behave in this way every time he had ANY chicken bones. He just couldn't seem to digest them and the bones would literally come out in (chew -size) pieces in his poo. He'd chomped them with his teeth and that's the way they remained. ;) Pushing them out really hurt the poor bugger.

Just a thought

Hi Apolo,

Poor little bubby, she sounds like she is stressed. First things first. What has changed in the past few days? Have you shaved or trimmed around her bum? I have a little one here who is quite upset over me shaving her for the first time around that area. She whinges evertime she needs to do No2 but after she has done it all is well. Have you checked her anal glands? May need expressing even though she is young. Is it only when she needs to eliminate or is it constant?

I would put her on a soft bland diet for a few days to see if this makes a difference.

Hi t-time.

No bowel blockage. vets checked her stool that I took to them on the first visit. She did another late in the afternoon while she was at the vets and that was checked as well. A OK no problems there.

She had chicken neck on Sunday morning and all this started around 6.00pn Monday with trip to vet Tuesday morning.

Hi poodlefan

She gets Eukanuba one day, Royal Canin the next both for puppy.

I make mince with veggies, rice or pasta, egg, garlic and she gets that at lunch

Raw chicken or raw mince at night.

Plenty of water on hand all the time.

Her stools are good so the vets say.

I took another one to them yesterday and all ok.

She has quieten down a lot and at present is sleeping in one of the cat houses that she loved but mainly that is next to where I am sitting.

Hi Jag

She did get a light clip on Monday morning. Both front feet and yes tail and bum.

She is used to the clippers as she has something done each week since she was 4 weeks old.

As she does not go out no one sees her but us.

We are getting her used to the clippers very slowly and she is ok with the grooming.

Anal glands checked at the vets on Tuesday morning and before she left that evening. All clear.

What would you call a soft bland diet?

You poor thing

For a soft bland diet I use boiled rice and chicken. Bella was on this for 10 days after her bout of gastro (20 days in all). I bought an enormous rice steamer to cook the rice and steam the chicken. I have an enormous dog though

just a thought, maybe not related. i have a mini choc poodle who is 5 now. i can kinder relate to that screaming - because at times she goes crazy - screaming, yelping, running, banging into walls, spinning in circles - took a while to realize what it was when she was little - worked out if she picks up a flea even on just her paw, she goes into a total frenzy until i remove it. she is so sensitive..its such a worry when you cant find what destressing them feels for you..any hows was just a thought. hopes everything will be ok with yr puppy

Hi lucyluv

This little girl can not bark (at present) and does cry sometimes but not much.

She has always been the quietest dog/pup I have ever had.

It is the very loud screaming, running, banging into walls, spinning in circles that I am worried about and so are the vets.

She has no flees or ticks.

Only had three screaming episodes this morning and it is getting quieter each time.

A big thank you to all who replied to this topic and to those who privately PMed me.

Baby is much happier now.

Tonight for the first time in a week she cuddled up in my arms and seemed to be happy there.

Squealing has stopped and tonight she barked for the first time.

This shocked me as well as herself.

She is now sleeping in the Whiskas cat house with her mother and the house is quiet and we can watch TV in peace.

Thanks again everyone.

Apolo

I knew of a toy poodle that did this, that lived in very unusual circumstances. Nugget was a gift to a woman with an intellectual disability, and the pair of them lived together very happily. I'm not sure of all of his history but he was a lovely gentle little dog on the lead and well housebroken, but had extreme separation anxiety. If his owner wasn't around, the shrillness of his barking/screaming was enough to make people walk out of their houses thinking he'd been hit by a car or something, it was really painful to be near. However he also did have these strange manic episodes of banging and spinning, just like you've described. The vet finally decided he was having epileptic seizures and the medication for that did seem to help a little bit, but he was never a really stable little dog. The 'seizures' didn't really get much worse, but they got closer together/more frequent as he got older. However, he eventually died of some sort of infection in his lungs, to the huge distress of his poor owner (who won't be able to have another dog now, she'll probably have to move into some sort of care soon). He did bring a lot of joy to her in the time he had with her!

I wonder if anything happened to him while your weren't with him. I don't know if you spend time away from him or if he is in the care of others. But it sounds like stress or trauma. Maybe he has given himself a scare and needs to get over it? I am glad that he is doing much better poor baby!

Hi vanessa

The pup is a girl not a boy.

She has improved a lot.

Today she came inside through the pet door and was squealing very loud and I thought we were going through it again.

We have worked out that as she has long hair a ant has got into the hair and bitten her.

As she is black it is almost impossible to see if she has been bitten.

I found a ant on her today.

After about 15 minutes in my arms she quieten down and has been ok since.

Thanks

Apolo

ant bite? That's interesting, I would not have thought of that, but they do have a pesky lil bite. Could be?

I was wondering, sometimes poodles are prone to their legs 'popping' in and out of the joints (please feel free to correct me experts, I am only going by past experiences with -poodles- dogs as a child).

But the ant things sounds like good detectve work, too. Maybe it's that. would explain why the vet didn't pick up on it.
