Pogo
Hi All, Our new boy is on his way and we were wondering what your experience may have been with heat pads for your pup. I have looked at the type that is put in the microwave and will provide a comfortable warmth for many hours. We want to make his first night with us as stress free as possible. We have also bought a teddy which we have put into bed with us for the past week to get our scent onto it and also have a new blanket for him. Both of which we will leave with our breeder so that it has our scent and his brothers scent when he comes to his new home for the first time. Our old girl loved that bit of extra warmth during the colder months so, we want to look after our little boy as well. Any feedback greatly appreciated. By the way our boy,l ike our old girl will have a soft comfy bed in our room next to us with a blanket for cuddling up to as well.
noisymina
It is really cheap and easy to make your own "heat wheats". If you have a problem getting the wheat - health food stores usually have it - you can use some barley from the supermarket instead. Just sew it into some calico, and make a softer, removable cover (I use velcro to close) to go over it. And that is all to it.

When pup goes out during the night to go potty when we come back we are both frozen. Its ok for me cause hubby has kept the bed warm but poor Bailey goes back to his crate cold. noisymina
With plenty of padding underneath and on top (so the dog is not in direct contact with the heat), you can make it fairly warm to start with and it will insulate from the cold to some extent. However, it does only take a matter of 2 to 2 1/2 mins in the microwave to re-heat - no messy re-fillling and no leaks like with hot water botttles. One can do it quite safely while half asleep, if need be. In the case of night visits outside, just shove it in to re-heat whilst you are out - and then just slide it back in when you come back in. You would need a microwave with the electronic timer, of course, to avoid over-doing it.
