Levi
I have recently adopted a lovely 7 month old German Shepherd from the pound. She was surrendered because she was too boisterous (ie. we couldn't be bothered training her  ) and was then adopted and returned to the pound twice for the same reason. Needless to say, she is boisterous!!! She is a lovely natured girl who has no idea how to behave appropriately but learns really fast and is very willing. Having said that, I have always had my dogs since they were puppies and re-training a 'teenager' is somewhat beyond my level of ability . I need some help in training her and am looking for recommendations of courses or training schools on the Southside of Brisbane. I have contacted Val Bonney with an outline of Rani's behaviour and she recommended I bring her along for an assessment and then enrol in an 8 week basic obedience course. This sounds fine except that it would take me over an hour to get there and the cost of petrol would be a killer ! Does anyone have any experience or knowledge of any other good training providers on the Southside of Brisbane?
MolassesLass
A few options: Commercial: VIP Pet Foods Training School Scallywags Dog School CCCQ clubs: Redlands Dog Obedience Jimboomba Obedience Logan Obedience Southside Dog Obedience Edit to fix Scallywags link. Thanks SS Edited July 8, 2006 by molasseslass
Levi
Thanks molasseslass, I definitely need more than a CCCQ obedience club which is what we will move on to once our issues are a little more controlled. Do you have personal experience of either of the two other organisations? Ideally I am looking for personal experiences people have had rather than picking one out of the yellow pages . MolassesLass
Nope sorry, I don't trust commercial training centres. But KitKat trains at and loves VIP and has previously trained at Scallywags and she won't mind if you PM her.

SkyesongTollrz
There's also Wagtails. I've never trained there personally, but the lady that owns it is a very respected obedience judge. http://www.wagtails.com.au/
blacklabrador
My parents train at Wagtails - with their last dog and their new puppy. It sounds very good and their little fella is doing very well!! (doing reliable off lead stays at 8 months old - he really is gonna be trialling material I think).
MrsD
Not sure why you say you need "more" than a CCCQ club but I can recommend Logan if it is of any help, I trained there for 6 years - Im with MLass, I am wary of commercial places.
Tilly
MyRani where you looking for one-on-one training or more of a group thing?
Levi
Mrs D - Rani has quite a few issues to work through and I need more specialised and knowledgeable attention than a general obedience club can give me. I also trained at Logan Dog Obedience some years ago and worked my Sheltie right through his CD title with the help of the instructors there. No offence to any club is intended. Tilly - I feel that perhaps it would be better for Rani if we had some one-on-one training at home to help build both our confidence and before venturing out in the scary world of group work. Rani is also not going to be fully vaccinated until mid-August and our needs are fairly urgent . I know that initially I asked for an obedience course, and this was in response to Val Bonney's advice. I really think such and environment may be too daunting for Rani until she becomes more confident in me as her 'fearless leader' :D . Since we cannot go out for another month at least, I am going to have to find someone to help me at home. Our greatest issue at the moment is excessive mouthing. She mouths everytime anyone touches her especially me, she jumps up and bites me in the arms and in the legs and feet while I am walking. All this is non-aggressive, but nonetheless painful and disrespectful and very frustrating. My arms and legs are covered in bruises :D . I would like to build a relationship with her and feel that by starting to implement obedience strategies this may develop. I am currently using the triangle of temptation and she is doing very well with that, but her general behaviour is not yet improving. Bearing in mind that I have had this dog for only two weeks and she spent a month in the pound, being adopted and returned twice. Pardon me for rambling on, I hope I am making some sense ? MyRani, IMO it sounds like you need a behaviouralist rather than an obedience course or club, however I agree that you probably need to establish some sort of pack heirachy as a first priority (a good behaviouralist should be able to help you with that as well). I dont know of anyone but perhaps others can suggest someone in Brisbane (apart from Val Bonney). Can I ask when did you train at Logan & what was your dogs name? :D
Levi
A behaviourist may be what I need - I am really new to this. Any suggestions anyone? My Sheltie's name was Levi. He passed away earlier this year aged 11 - I lost him to cancer . He was trialling when he was about 2 I think (I would have to check his trophies) and won every trial he entered including his sweepstakes. Once we hit open, he decided he didn't like it anymore and refused to retrieve the dumbell .

Sorry I cant help with someone to help with Rani, hopefully someone else will be able to.
Staff'n'Toller
Try PM'ing Mel774 on the forum, she is currently completing the Cert IV in Behavioural Dog Training, and would have some great contacts re: Veterinary Behaviourists. I'm not sure where in Brisbane she is though. You GSD sounds like my Kelpie- very sensitive to touch and sounds as though she needs a positive desensitisation program as well as leadership, but I can tell you from experience that punishing the mouthing won't help her any. Cheers, Mel. Edited July 9, 2006 by Staff'n'Toller
