dasha
My dogs eat rabbits (fresh) quite often. We have never had a problem with the transference of diseases from rabbits to dogs. I am pretty sure that myxo and calici are species specific. Just the other day we saw a rabbit on our driveway so I got my faster kelpie out and pointed it out to her as we wanted to catch it. ( I was going to practice skinning and then feed it to the dogs). She caught it for us but raced around the house with us after her trying to get the rabbit from her but she ate the whole thing in about 1 minute flat. It was only little though. ANyway, the dogs catch them often and love them.
Working_Setters
Hi Dasha, Personally I don't have a problem with what you did, but just thought you might not be aware that coursing (chasing game, including rabbits), with a dog is illegal in Oz. Personally I think it's a load of bull, but that is the law, so maybe need to be careful on a public forum like DOL. So what you're saying is that your kelpie accidentally slipped out of your grasp and ignored your recall whistle, eventually the dog did obey and the rabbit escaped. On the way back to you the dog found a second, recently deceased rabbit that died of natural causes, and proudly displayed her find before eating the whole thing. You were really amazed because that sort of thing has never happened to you before :D

Netti
Recently while walking on a country road my dogs came across a freshly done road kill rabbit. Flynn picked it up and was determined to bring it home. After a couple of kms I felt sorry for him so I carried the dead rabbit home in my back pack. YEW The things we do for our dogs. Anyway it kept the two dogs amused for a couple of hours having a good chew on the poor old rabbit. My dogs love to chase rabbits and hares (with out my permission of course). Guest Tiggy
Recently while walking on a country road my dogs came across a freshly done road kill rabbit. YEW LOL I'd love to feed my dogs rabbit but the only rabbit I've seen is at the butcher for $19.99kg. I love my dogs but that's too pricey. What's the frozen kangaroo from the supermarket like? It says not fit for human consumption so alarm bells ring.
