greypaws
What is everyone's preferred training treat and why? Particularly interested to hear from what trainers recommend in their classes. Anything you don't use eg: too fatty, takes too long to eat etc? Much Appreciated! layka
shoemonster
I use very small pieces of kabana, but i think it makes them fart lol So I am thinking of changing to something else At home I use those natures gift treats (the ones from the supermarket, liver chicken or beef) These are both pretty salty but they don't have huge amounts of them either and their normal diets are good, so i don't worry too much
lab and poodle
The fast treats Cooked liver, herb and garlic sausage, franks, cat food, stras, chicken sausage, lucheon, ham and chicken. I have to cut it up into tiny pieces for my poodle, other wise she spits it out and plays with it.
shekhina
Today I'm using small cubes of cheese, but also like to use cabana. At home I use either dry cat food (dogs LOVE it ) or ham, yes, my ham
hopenfox
I use mostly roast meat, chopped small or really thin slices of sausages. I think the greasier, smellier, softer and warmer the treat, the better, for teaching new things. For other already known exercises, I may use less tasty treats like pop corn or breakfast cereals. I love using the sausage slices, because though they're only 1mm or less wide, they're easy for the dog to feel in their mouth, and easy to feed without losing my hand down their throat! For my agility class, I recommend everyone use the roast meat or sausages for learning anything new. Most doggy people don't seem to mind their hands getting greasy. I don't like people using hard dry food of any kind as treats, unless they can show me their dog loves it and eats really carefully and slowly. (Which hasn't happened yet!) J...
I've been using dried liver because I can stick it in my pocket and not make a mess..... however given Darcy couldn't give a stuff about the dried liver in class today, I'm thinking of switching to some kind of lunch meat type product. I'll be interested to see what everyone else uses.... Edited June 18, 2006 by feralpup
sandyl
I use to use dried liver. Then polony and now I'm using schmakos. Only for the reasons the dogs love it and its easy to feed & carry.
ShesaLikeableBiBear
I dry my own liver in a de-hydrater. They may be expensive initially but last week I ran out and stopped at a butcher to get a little more and it was $2.50 for 150g. With the de-hydrater I bought the extra plastic trays so that it doesnt stick to the regular racks. I have also done chicken tenderloins.
Tralee
Hi layka. I use repetition and have practically never used treats. It works for me.
greypaws
whatever works eh! I have been using shredded ham or bacon in my puppy classes, but fear it might be too fatty? Obviously only small amounts are given during a session. Just wondering if this kind of amount that one would use during training maybe twice or so weekly would be any reason to worry about pancreatitis or something? Other things I use are cat kibble, nutri grain, cheese, dried liver, chicken, cabanossi, luncheon. Just trying to find the safest option to recommend to clients. thanks for your replies everyone. MrsD
With my 3 shepherds I have always used schmackos, but I can see I will probably have to find something more enticing for my sheltie, the only thing he seems to find interesting right now is raw mince . Bully
Kabana is King with Pele Cheese is great, liver treats. I try to vary it to keep it interesting, and only tiny pieces, about fingernail size.

I've thought of getting one but have never seen them in the department stores. Might get Pele one for Christmas
baileyb
Use anything that gets their attention. I use smelly food like cabana, cheese, cooked chicken etc. for training and good-os/shmackos for everyday stuff.
Netti
I have use ham, sausage and chicken. My favorite is schmakos cos they are easliy cut into small pieces with scissors. I find if the dog is hungry it makes them less fussy. Cheers Netti
indi_dog
Indi loves Kabana! Although on a really hot day, it tends to attract flies this drives me absolutely crazy!! I also cut cheese into small cubes, and surprisingly, small pieces of just dried dog kibble go down really well too.

We buy chicken breast for our kitten - they REGULARLY mark down the chicken breast here - usually on a Monday/Tuesday night, to around $4 for their pre-pack in the chicken fridge which is usually over 1KG! And here I was buying it for regular price from the Deli a couple of metres away! I don't think many people actually walk past that fridge - on the other side of the pet meat fridge if you know where that it? Maybe it might be the same at your Maleny Woolies? Also, I would just like to say my Boxer Rocky LURVES Panda's doggy Liver Treats - MUCH BETTER than Liver Treats from the Store - They are VERY CHEWY!!! Ones in the store are hardy crappy things - dogs have to stop what they're learning to eat it, but these ones can be gulped after a few quick chews! If you ever sell your Treats Panda, I'll be first in line to buy them until I can buy my own de-hydrator - which will probably be NEVER! -WithEverythingIAm Edited June 18, 2006 by witheverythingiam
jaybeece
Liver treats, smackos, cheese and anything else he takes a fancy to. He also gets a tin of cat food (the stinkier the better) if he's behaved really well at the shops It does make for strange looks from people walking past- a large dog being fed a tiny tin of cat food by a very excited owner, but he loves it. Alpha
I do liver in a low oven for 10-20 minutes, dries nicely and packed in zip lock sandwich bags..no pocket mess, easy access. Cheese is a fav and cabana, ham and stras too. I think anything they would not normally have is a good rule of thumb..I saw someone use Twisties once as she'd forgotten her treats The dog worked the best ever but she has declined to use that treat again
