indi_dog Posted June 8, 2006 Share Posted June 8, 2006 This is probably a really dumb question, but I've been looking around for a long leash to practise recalls with (about 10m would be good). Indi and I were promoted at obedience school, and our class is practising off leash recalls, but I don't feel she is ready to be off leash (she's still only a pup, and being a border collie the temptation of herding everything that moves is just too much- I'm terrified she will bolt) I have a flexi-leash, but it doesn't work so well with practising recalls because she will feel the leash pull at her collar as I walk out from her and will follow me. I went to pet stock and mega pets warehouse today, but they don't have long leashes and the people working there don't seem to have any idea of what I'm talking about. I found a Black Dog recall leash online, but it's only 5 metres. I did find some leashes overseas that would be perfect, but I'd rather buy one in Australia if I can! The Black Dog 5 metre leash was almost $30, which sounded a bit steep to me. I never even thought of Horseland... we have a few places out here that sell products for horses so I might check them out. Edited to say, I just found the lunge rein on the Horseland website too- $19.95 for 9 metres seems pretty decent to me! lab and poodle Posted June 9, 2006 Share Posted June 9, 2006 I have found on a recall lead that you have to worry about three things to help your further training they are 1) The weight 2) The weight 3) The weight This is so the dog forgets that this exists, and hence can't distinguish this training situation from a real situation. I would not use a lunging rope. What I have found extremely good is water ski rope. It is very strong, and can be got in as small as 4mm diameters. This weighs about 100g per 10 metres.I would use it on a dog as big as a lab no sweat as it has a huge breaking strain.(get over the size) . I also use this for a tracking line for my mini poodle. It is kind on one's hands. The long leads suggested are way to heavy and visible. Put some kind of end on it though! At a latter date, I wouldn't even use a clasp going on to a collar. even this is to heavy and alerts the dog to the lead's presence. I would tie it instead. HAve you sorted out what you are going to do if puppy takes off? Better sort it out now rather than when he/she takes off and you have to respond in the heat of the moment. My perfered method is for them to discover the sudden stop, and then go up the rope towards them and give them a recall that works. And treat. And treat. That's why I want the long recall leash ;) so that if she does bolt, then I've got the other end of the line. We train with our obedience club each weekend, and our instructor is going to help us out with using the long lead correctly Indi understands the concept of recalls, and will do it off leash in the backyard, however I don't want to risk having an 8 month old, extremely friendly border collie pup off leash at my club. I would not use a lunging rope. Agree completely with L&P (not to be confused with the drink ), you need something that is very lightweight so the dog doesnt know if its there or not. Having something as heavy as a lunging rope or a 10m long lead made of normal lead material defeats the purpose IMO - the dog should think that there is no lead.
