Herding Sheep

Recommended Posts

Thanks to Pat. Smith and Bindibu for their contacts

I now have 2 of mine booked for a sheep herding instinct trial on Sunday 18 June. Am taking the oldest and youngest with the hope that oldest may be a calming influence

AND its only about an 45 minute drive (provided we dont get lost).

Why oh why is it that ALL BREEDS can do herding in the US and not Oz?

I know nothing about herding trials, but the instructors who run the sheepdog school down here near Yass NSW are experienced with all breeds.

The humans get to play sheepdog regularly, swapping sheep over so the sheep don't get stressed by all the different herding styles.

Weellll, it went like this, test due at 2.30pm and I wanted to be there by 2.10pm, early so lunched enroute and then OH disappeared into Spotlight at Morayfield, the mobile went at 1.45pm to say that the paddocks were too wet, hubby overseas, a group of students there and can we please re-schedule.

Explained that we were only 10 mins max drive away and had driven down from Maleny (125k round trip-at least not Kuraby) and could we at least come and see the set up.

No!! re-scheduled for next Sat but have a feeling it will be re-scheduled again as showers due all week.

Not a good start and oldest and youngest couldnt understand why they went for a drive for nothing.

hESAPANDABEAR

This wouldn't be a trial it must be just for a lesson as no trials are schuduled till 1st July by the Working Dog Club of Qld and this is at Postmans Ridge.

Herding Insinct Test/Trial call it whatever, i.e. to see if they had the nouse as it used to be called.

Knew that Skye has it in her as she has separated about 20 from a flock of 50 or so when she was a pup (now 8) and herded them. She went well today  .

Jemma (3) surprised me, I would have said nervous, but OH says cautious. She took her time but eventually got the idea. She is a differnet dog away from the others  .

Anyway both passed their instinct test at stage one, and are re-booked for Friday morning.

OH took camera but we have all sheep and no dogs :) , his his a still but will take the DVDcam Friday

Both Skye and Jemma had their first training session yesterday, Skye is an absolute star and am really chuffed with her and so were the instructors, she's a natural, whilst Jemma still a little unsure of herself.

These are taken from the movie camera and so a little blurred. I need a drivers licence for it

The top one is Jemma and the bottom Skye.

They are Damara sheep (to be crossed with Dorpers) from South Africa. Do a lot better than merino in tihs climate with little or no grass as they graze like goats, they dont need crutching, clipping etc and are bred for meat rather than wool. Being that they are so big, perhaps that's why Jemma doesn't quite know what to do :o
