Devo
I am looking for a leash free park around Fitzroy or surrounding areas to take my 14 week old pup.
KismetKat
try your local council's website. Mine has a list of leash-free areas, and so do others I have seen. So perhaps yours does too.

haven
I wouldnt do that if I were you... Do a forum search or run a poll on how many members here have had an altercation in an offleash park because of some dimwit owner who let their dog run riot before you think about taking a 14 week old puppy (during his critical period for socialisation) to an off leash park. Erny
I agree with Haven. Congratulations for looking to do some early socialisation with your pup, but avoid public parks. Not only is the environment there uncontrolled and you run the risk of doh doh owners letting their dogs rush up to yours and causing a fearful experience for your pup, but you also have no control over knowing what dogs have been there and whether they are immunised against diseases. Guest Tess32
Be careful at Fawkner Park. While it is sometimes deserted (more or less) there are a LOT of dogs there of a morning that aren't controlled, more than any other park I've been to. There are also some pretty damn annoying kids who walk through there. It's pretty good on weekends though.
jaybeece
Please don't take that pup to an offlead park yet I cringe when I see dogs younger than 4 months at my park as they nearly always get bowled over by an enthusiastic adult who doesn't realise how small they are. It'll only serve to make the pup scared of anything bigger than it. You're much better off sticking to puppy school so the pup can play with dogs it's own size without feeling intimidated. Alpha
What about a puppy group or puppy socialisation program? Some vets run them for nominal fees .
Devo
I hear what your saying with the off leash parks, i myself have never been to one but thought it might be valuable for him. I guess we might wait a few more months. We completed puppy pre-school 3 weeks ago he went great! But i worry that he isnt meeting enough other dogs atm. My vet doesnt run any preograms other than PPS. It sucks not having many other friends with dogs!
jaybeece
I wouldn't worry too much about other dogs at this stage. Socialising is more than just meeting dogs; it's new environments, people and experiences. If you take him out and about with you, I'm sure you'll encounter other dogs onlead anyway. Obedience schools will also often run classes for young (less than 6 months) dogs.
Devo
He always comes with me when i leave the house, except for going to work. I might call the local obedience club (i think it is Northcote) and see what they have to offer.. I cant wait to start more training! We already have sit, drop, stay and shake hands.. he's getting bored of thoes! hehe Thanks!
shoemonster
Definitely go to obedience, it's great for them, and safer than a park as the people are there to learn, and the dogs are under a little bit more control! We took Eddie to obedience classes as soon as he had his 2nd needle, after talking to the vet who told us it was a justifiable risk

Sardog
Northcote Obedience Dog Club is a very good club. The President is Ray Hanson and I think maybe his daughter Loretta is in charge of the younger/newbies. Give that a try, they will steer you in the right direction, they have been there for many years and are very experienced. Mavis Hanson is the Secretary also. Hope this helps.
