Jacquel83
Hi all.. I've recently switched my puppys food from Eagle Pack Large Breed FOrmula to Royal Canin Maxi Junior as my pup is not interested in large breed formula at all(ive tried all sorts of ways, soaked them, add spoonsful of canned food etc in the end to find he really isnt interested). The gd thing is he enjoys RC better...so i changed his diet overnight(abruptly)..i know im supposed to change his diet gradually as to not upset his stomach but i was just so overwhelmed that he finally found something he likes so i just changed it.. Now..his poo is very soft(diahrroea like)...a bit like milkshake...and also he poos several times a day. He sleeps in with us and he never poos in that area..no accidents b4 but he actually did it. I was thinking maybe he wanted to go toilet overnight but we were sleeping..isit dog diahrroea? And also he poos more than he does..like 8 times a day... ANy advice on this? Also...tips on cleaning carpet stains? thanks...
ShesaLikeableBiBear
Unfortunately as you have said changing food quickly can lead to pooh problems, 8 times per day is certainly too much. Use carpet power which you can get from the supermarket, or woolwash.
morgan
That is unfortunate - I have changed many pups and dogs over to RC abruptly without problems. Maybe the higher grain content of this particular formulation has caused it - I only use the adult formulations these days after having growth problems with the RC Maxi Junior formula in my last litter. Any food related diarrhea I always treat by withholding dry food and giving some natural yoghurt (with slippery elm if you have some) and just some raw chicken necks to stop them thinking they are being starved to death A day or two of this and they are usually fine, just reintroduce food gradually. wolfgirl
Stop the dry food until the sloppy poops cease and feed steamed rice and boiled chicken and once they start to firm slowly add in a small amount of dry food gradually. Another good thing to use is once you get the stain out dry the area and use Febreeze and there will be no lingering smells. Good luck.
InspectorRex
Yes you did do the change too abruptly. Put your puppy on boiled chicken breast fillets( no skin) and rice for a few days until his poot little tummy recovers. Then take about 10 days to reintroduce the Royal Canin. My dogs have never been able to tolerate RC but have had no problem with Eagle Pack. Don't forget your puppy with be teething probably so maybe reluctant to eat solid foods for a bit. Suggestion; once his tummy settles( if is hasn't within the next 24hrs I would have him to a Vet in case he has a tummy bug ) try the Eagle Pack Holistic Range. Watch that you puppy does not get dehydrated. Do not use Febreeze on your carpet; overseas studies have found it to be poisionous to animals. If mine had a accident ( either poop or vomit) I would blot it up then get a hot wet twell soaked in Palmolive Dish detergent and then keep blotting the spot and I have never yet had a stain left in the carpet and we have light coloured carpert
wolfgirl
Thanks Inspector Rex for that info on Febreeze, I wasn't aware of that, I usually clean any stain with diluted woolwash and once dry would lightly spray Febreeze to ensure there were no more lingering smells. Had you not posted I wouldn't be made aware of that.
Jacquel83
im now feeding him rice, egg with chicken n vege meat rolls(tuckertime). he leaves his kibbles left half ..din finish it..wonder if he knows that caused his uncomfyness. im trying to use the vinegar method of removing stains hopefully it works! Nadia
I thought the Febreeze thing had been proved to be an Urban Myth. As far as I know it was one of those hoax type emails that circulated and was disproved.
Jacquel83
Hi people, he is still suffering from a very loose stools..shld i bring himto the vet? also..is ther a possibility he might be having sensitive stomach to royal canin? isit normal to experience diahrroea if u changed dry foods? thou he hadaccidents in the living area sometimes..he never poo in my room(which he sleeps in at night)..but he did for the 2 days..i was thinking whether he couldnt hold it or wat.. -worried mum-
wolfgirl
Hi, I would be going to the vet to get him checked out by now if he isn't much better. Pups/dogs can get an upset stomach when food is changed quickly, the best way to introduce a new food is to do it gradually to allow their stomachs to tolerate it. Let us know how he is going and hoping he is feeling much better soon. ;)
InspectorRex
I agree with wolfgirl- this pup needs to be seen by a Vet and rather soon before he becomes dehydrated. Why are you changing his diet again? Just feed him boiled skinless chicken and rice for a few days and nothing else until you know what you are dealing with.He could have a tummy bug or anything and this needs to be sorted before you start on a proper diet him. Let us know how you get on at the Vets
kaywoman68
There IS a possibility RC might not be good for his tummy (different dogs do do better on some foods rather than others) but I think it might be the sudden change of diet that has lead to runny stools. Orson had runny stools when he was about 3 months. He had really runny stools and I was told by my mum to feed him only boiled chicken. It took about 3 days for his tummy to settle and not have runny stools. Now he's big, heavy (well, compared to when I first got him) and healthy. He and Oi now has RC Medium Adult and cooked breast mince all the time ;)
MolassesLass
Maybe the higher grain content of this particular formulation has caused it - I only use the adult formulations these days after having growth problems with the RC Maxi Junior formula in my last litter. Morgan, I'm interested to know what the problems were? I have recently swapped over to RC Maxi Junior for my Bullmastiff, since he has such a specialised structure (in comparison to a medium sized athletic breed like my BCs). Do not use Febreeze on your carpet; overseas studies have found it to be poisionous to animals. Do you have any links or information on these studies because most available evidence suggests this is not the case. Febreze Dangerous? Staffy-Lover
when i first got my russian blue cat i changed its diet as i knew no better - $1500 later the vet told me that babies pups and cats can become seriously ill from a rapid change in food. I suggest you go back to mixing the old food and the new food and slowly changing it over. and a vet visit definately...

morgan
My previous large breed litters were started on RC Starter, and their dams fed on this for the latter half of the pregnancy - the pups were swapped over to RC Maxi Junior around a couple of months old. They were then swapped over to the Maxi Energy formula at around 12-15 months, as adults they get either this or Maxi Sensible for a change. Every dam and pup has been given raw chicken necks, wings, turkey tails etc every day as well. My last litter was started the same way, but put onto Maxi Babydog at 5 or 6 weeks, as I felt the lower protein level would be better for them. One of the boys started knuckling over very badly by 8 weeks - by the third day he looked quite deformed. I started adding dolomite to his food to sort out the calcium/magnesium/phosphorus balance and within 3 days he was back to normal. I put the rest of the litter onto it at the same time, and they all stayed on it for 6 months. This condition is caused by excess protein upsetting the balance, and has been seen in a number of breeds - even whippets, so it is not just large breeds. I had to immediately reduce the protein levels, and started mixing adult dry food in with the babydog. Every time I let the protein level go up again by using some maxi Junior, something would happen - east-west fronts, cowhocks, upright pasterns. Each time I would reduce the protein level to around 24-25% and they would improve. It was a bit of a shock, as I have not had these problems in over 25 years of breeding from this dam line, no matter which stud dog I've used. The sire and his 2 siblings have wonderful sound legs, as did the previous few generations. These pups are now 10 mths, and have Maxi Energy and Maxi Sensible, with occasional Medium Energy and Medium Adult to lower the protein levels. Their fronts have settled down, but hocks are still a bit dodgy - a problem I have not seen in 8 generations. Since this happened I have spoken to several breeders who rear their pups on adult formula RC for the same reason. Hope this helps!
MolassesLass
Thanks for the reply Morgan. The whole protein issue, hmmmm, it's a doozy.
