I just got abit excited cause the last meet was sooooooo good!!! Love Staffies, your crazy staffie can meet my crazy staffie & the others too at the next meet. Guy's PLEASE bring along your staffies to the next meet, cause I'd love for Tess to meet them! :rolleyes: Myszka, If all the dobes (Flame Rex Jones & Jefe) meet up somewhere seperate from the Dol meet, I'd love to bring GirlDog along seeing as she is half dobe. I am not a believer that you cannot get 100% reliability from a dog, I know it can be done as I have done it numerous times & have seen others do it. I do feel that any dog that gets the leash dropped should have a reliable recall, maybe 100% is a bit much for a pet owner to achieve though... These though are my opinions & what people do with their own dog is of course up to them. Myszka I wouldnt take Rex to one of these meets, I feel that in the last 12 months (since my intervention :rolleyes: ) Rex has improved dramatically, others have mentioned this to me also... But taking into this environment could reverse this great work you have done... & I cant see for what gain. I have told you like I have told many, that if your going to train, you have to control the other players, I dont think you can control the other players at a social off leash park, this thread shows you that you wont. I know you would enjoy meeting everyone, but as these things should be always subject to a risk assessment, the lower risk dogs are mature dogs with no dog problems, the higher risk categories are younger dogs & dogs with pre existing dog issues... I personally would only take a dog in the lower risk categorie & never one in the higher risk categories... Thats just my opinion though.... We have no Idea. we were told he was around 18 months when we adopted him. but judging by the dog's character and also by the transfer of dog registration documents which states birth date as 01/01/2003 (which to me is not accurate) we think he's anything between 4 to 6 years... not that we really care about it. I have to admit the dog has always had great character. in the words of our vet he's "confident, well behaved dog".He likes to play rough, as most dogs do, but he's not a playful dog (that's why I think he must be older, he's certainly not a puppy). He's never been aggressive to other dogs... well, only when Toqui was biting his ear!... ah.. and once when Toqui was playing rough with my wife and he (toqui) growled at her, and then Jefe jumped in her defence. :rolleyes: He's got a very strong pack drive. Perhaps Rex isn't ready for a big social meet, perhaps a small number who will comply with myszkas request could meet up to encourage Rex to be more social. Do you think that would be a better idea K9? I mentioned in a previous post that if Rex, Jefe, Flame, Jones & perhaps GirlDog met somewhere it may work out for the better. His behaviour at my recent workshops has been exemplory, having that said, if Myszka feels he may be stressed, it isnt good for him... Tess is a crossbreed to btw, so she might be abit bigger than Belle, but she can run just as fast after the ball. RedX3 Posted June 7, 2006 Share Posted June 7, 2006 (edited) My little Cav is shy around dogs, and so i was wondering if this kind of thing would be suitable? Socialising seems to be the key, and the dog parks we've been to so far haven't had any dogs >.<. She's crazy for humans, but she gets nervous (tail-between-legs, straight out walking away, etc.) when she meets dogs, especially large ones, and I'm worried about her developing a fear of dogs if one was to paw her or something here... But then again, she's spoiled and completely mothered around the house, so I'm really not sure. I was hoping to bring her to one of these (the August one, I can't come on the next one) and try and socialise her with some more dogs, as she did start getting a tiny bit more relaxed around the dogs at her adolescent school. And on-leash or off, she moves so slowly around other dogs that we'd be able to catch her anyway. I'm also currently working on sitting, staying down and recall with distractions, and she's pretty good with that... some of the time at least. Although from a personal social perspective it sounds like a great idea, I dont like to go away for a day without my dog, he is alone way more than enough - he spends 10 or more hours a day with no company, its not fair to do it to him on weekends. Maybe you could borrow one of Rex's dobe girlfriends for the day & bring her with you It sounds as you belive that they are any better than him :rolleyes: think twice - After all they are all related. On a serious note I wouldnt take someones dog - no matter how well I know them - and let it off in a park with heaps of other dogs, one might have a simmilar problem to Rex and the other wont take any cr*p from any dog, plus their recall is worse than Rexs. Last one Id consider although she has a very good recall and would just follow me and look me in the eyes and couldnt care about any dog is currently unavailable. Livi Posted June 8, 2006 Share Posted June 8, 2006 There would be people with much more knowledge than me who could help you RedX3 but speaking from my own experience with a Cavalier just like yours I think she would be a little bit too scared ;) My little girl hid under the chair under my legs at puppy pre-school haha, the vet nurse advised me to get up and move away so I did and she just ran under someone elses chair !! I took her to regular obedience and she did get more confident with gentle smaller dogs but was never the type who would enjoy an offlead area with lots of larger dogs. Like yours she loved people though and would enthusiastically greet any human she met. I would suggest obedience classes, let the instructor/s know she is scared around bigger and/or more boisterous dogs and they will help you to help her :D You have to be really aware of what is going on around you at all times though to keep control of the situation. Once when I was signing in to obedience I felt a little tug on the lead and looked down to see a Golden Retriever at the end..I couldn't see my little Cav, she was underneath him He was "only being friendly" but for her it was like horror of horrors Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
