Hi ?All,

Just wondering if anyone has some advice for me!!

We have new pup, she has been with us for a week now and still wakes up every hour crying!!!

She sleeps in a warm bed in our bedroom right next to our bed with a warm blanket, hot water bottle, ticking clock and everything........

At first I thought it was because she needed to do a wee so I would pick her up take her outside to wee. She won't wee so I take her back to bed.

This has now going on for a week with no improvements and I honestly don't know what to do............

Our first dog cried a couple of times on the first couple of nights but then slept through with no problems at all.

I know she needs to settle in and I understand that and will do anything to make her feel safe and comfy.

Any suggestions you have would be wonderful.

Does she sleep in a crate? My new pup slept best in a crate for the first cause it made him feel secure - less area to defend from burglars. Are you ignoring the crying or getting up to comfort her? If you are getting up, she may be enjoying the extra attention :)

Both my pups were different, Bella howled for 6 nights and Bruno only did a little whimper every hour which I ignored and stopped after three days.

Not sure what else to recommend. Good luck.

Hi Bellasperson,

Thanks for your help :)

She is sort of in a crate, its one of those puppy gates bended around to form a square......do you think she would be better in a crate? I have one I can use........

I probably have been comforting her a little bit, only by putting my fingers through the fencing for some reassurance? Should I stop that? I have also been telling her to be quiet so that may not be helping either?.......

I know it's very hard to remember not to comfort or talk. Don't even make eye contact if they are crying. Bruno stopped after one night of me not sneaking in to give him a pat :D When I was up, I also said "Good boy" anytime he was quiet so he learns that quiet is what you are after.

I'm not sure whether you need a crate as you have a little pen already. Why don't you try a night with no talking or looking and if that doesn't help try the crate. Puppies are very good at working out how to get extra attention! I try and get them to focus on good ways to win my affection like sitting before they get let out of bed.

Have fun and hope you get some sleep :)

My new pup sleeps in a crate in the laundry and has never cried once. If she had, I would have ignored her. You pup has trained you very well - all it has to do is grizzle a little bit and you make a fuss. What a lucky pup, I wish I had a human trained as well as you are.

I can totally understand how you are feeling, I too have a new puppy I am trying to crate train. Never get up to them, never settle them, ignore them (unless the cry is obvously painful)

He sleeps in the ensuite in a crate, covered up, he cannot see us and we cannot see him. The first 5 nights were hard he cried all night.

Now I put him to bed at 10pm and I get up at 5.30am and put him out in the puppy run to toilet, he sleeps through the night, no crying.

You have to be cruel to be kind

Hi All,

Thank you for everyone that gave me advice ;)

We had our first almost completely interupted nights sleep last night!!!! I honestly can't tell you if she was finally getting used to it or if it was because we were all so very tired that I didn't hear her cry but, she whimpered once and I ignored her and she went straight back to sleep so I think we are on the improve!! Yay!!!

She is such a gorgeous girl!!!

I have heaps of pics but haven't had the chance to download them yet but I promise I will in the next couple of day and post some

That's wonderful that she slept all night.

I stuffed up completely last night cause bruno started crying at 3am which he hasn't done for three weeks. I decided to ignore him as I told you to do! He cried for half an hour. When I got up in the morning I found a lovely present for me in his crate! Serves me right. I'm not very good at thinking at 3am or I would have realised that this was not an I'm lonely cry but an I really really need to go to the toilet cry

Peibe, how is your puppy going?

Thanks for asking BellasPerson

My pup is adorable we are all smitten, including the Shar Pei, my bitch Jewel sits outside his puppy run and crys for him to come out and play lol

He sleeps through the night 10-5.30am, not even a wet spot in the crate. I am hoping that I can stretch the 5.30am to 6.30am as he gets older, I need that hours sleep

He still does not have a name yet, but is doing wonderfully

Excellent, I'm glad he's doing well. My older dog, Bella, like Jewel does a little cry when the pup is in his crate. Bruno now sleeps to 7am which is much more reasonable. I go to bed late though so he gets a toilet stop at 11.30 ish.

How come the pup hasn't got a name? How about Nile for "Jewel of the Nile" or Junior. He needs a name poor baby

LOL, I always take ages to name my keeper dogs, the foster get a name quick smart, we just run through names until they answer to one

Jewel waited 6 weeks before she got her call name'

Zephyr we had for a month

Ned we had for 2 weeks

A name will come sooner or later, at the moment he is just puppy
