9 Month Old Going To New Home

Hi,

I have a nine month old puppy dog that I am rehoming very soon. I was wondering if anyone has any advice that will make him leaving his home here with us, and his litter sister and mother any easier. I took him to the vet today to be desexed and he was very anxious as I realised he has never really been apart from us or his dog family here at any time. When we go to shows he is always with us and another dog or two, and when he is home here and we are away he has his mother and sister with him.

I am getting a little concerned that separation from us when he goes to his new home won't be as easy as I thought (or as easy as when they are young puppies 8 weeks going to their new homes.) Just wanting to know how others have handled this and whether I am worrying unnecessarily when the the time comes for him to go to his new home.

Thanks

hey sv

I wouldnt worry too much, i got Lana at 9 months from her breeder in a similar situation and she is settled in very well now (initially a bit scatty but really quick to get over it.)

However i have heard that you can make them more comfortable in their new home by sending a blanket or familiar item with them that has your scent... may just get him more settled at first...

Are there other dogs where he is going? If he is used to having a buddy this could also help...

If the new family he is going to live near by get them to come over and get to know him. He will also see that you are friendly with these people so he will feel more comfortable around them. Also take him for a visit to their house. They too can give you a toy or blanket so he gets used to their scent. With my fur kids I usually get the person to send a top or singlet they have worn and not washed so the puppy has their scent on it. It will take him a few weeks to adjust to his new environment but he will be fine. As long as his new family understands that he needs time to adjust and they don't push him he will be fine. Lots of love, understanding and food will win his heart. Dogs really do adjust well to rehoming - I think it is us that have a bigger problem with it. It never gets any easier though.
