New Puppies

I realise this is a purebred community, but well, I hope you can give me some advice. My bitsa has just had her first litter of puppies, and I am unsure if there is anything I should be doing. I have created a warm area for her to sleep in, but is there anything else I should do?

Thanks for your help :mad

Firstly, thanks for all the help so far. I have another question tho  The puppies are now (we think) 5 days old and I have noticed they have fleas  I dont think I can give them anything this young, but I am no expert ... ? If they are too young, when can I give them something, and what do you reccommend? Doesnt garlic help repel them? Can I give this to the mum and will it help with the pups? Poor things

You can make a lemon flea dip by peeling an entire lemon into thin slices, add 600ml of boling water and steep overnight. Then wash Mum in this, the chances are though that they are right through the environment where she and the puppies are and therin lies the problem of treating the environment. As a start get rid of all her bedding and give her new clean bedding.

Thanks hesapandabear. I will change her bedding and I think I will spray with fly spray (that says it kills fleas) and also give the pups a bath. I have just been searching the net and found that someone said its safe to wash them with palmovile dishwashing detergent and a gentle kids shampoo. So I think I might try that. Please let me know if its a big no no hehe

I cant think why palmolive dishwashing liquid for puppies of that age, their skin is very much more sensitive than ours, just use the lemon and if still unsure call your vet and ask their advice. If you do use the fly spray then you must remove the puppies from that environment.

You can put a dose of Frontline or Advantage on your mumma dog, it's ok for lactating bitches. It will eventually kill all the fleas since the pups are so close to her but it might take a few days.

Important that you get on top of it pretty fast as it can cause anaemia in young pups.

Don't forget to worm them with some puppy syrup at 2,4,6,8 weeks.

my experience with frontline was it was a waste of money but advantage did the trick my vet has had alot of complaints about frontline so ask your vet if they have had complaints and ask if they think the advantage works betters.
