Gotta say...if your not enjoying it...go somewhere else!

My pup and i have had a great time at puppy classes...he now sits when told, drops most of the time when told, stands, stays (to a point), recalls, goes to 'bed' (start of the send-a-way), is getting better at walking at heel, is leaning that it's more polite to sit and offer to shake hands then jump all over someone. However he is a little brat...so no matter what he learns he still 'tries it on' as such...cheeky brat that he is...but we are getting there :p

I've only been to my first class so far and the whole time devo sat under the chair when the other dogs were around but we did have a good time.. We tried to 'sit' but i'm sure we will get there!

Maybe you just dont have the right teacher?

edited for spelling... Very early! :p

Well, its a few things but I suppose I'm being a bit of a whinger :p It's held in the waiting room of the vet surgery and the floor is tiled. Its really slippery and a lot of the puppies spend their time slipping and sliding all over the place. There's also some people there with very big 'puppies' who can get quite out of control. Suppose Iam just having a whine really. It's not that bad. I guess I was a bit put off when the girl taking the class admired my puppies shiny coat/ sparkly eyes etc. She then asked me what I was feeding him. I told her a barf diet and she made a big deal in front of everyone about how rarely people balance the diet correctly on that 'program' and that I should really give him a certain brand of dried food as its all he'll ever really need. I was really embarrassed and felt a bit on the spot if you know what I mean. Will perserve with it for him though but can't wait to take him to some proper obedience classes :)

Our boys loved going when we took them. They loved socialising with the other dogs, made it much easier to get them to the vets (as that's where it was held.) Was a good way to monitor there weight gain and growth, and learnt some cool tricks. Was a good opportunity for us to meet other dog owners too.

Hi Doglicious

I know exactly how you feel...Kasper and I have just finished Puppy school...Kasper was scared of the other puppies at first but now it has turned into a full blown fear aggression...on the 2nd week we were all asked what we feed and I was the only Barf one and got the same spiel about not balanced enough etc...it's very embarrassing in front of all those people to be told your doing the wrong thing (even if you know your right)....mine wasn't a vet rooms either it was a training school held in a park....if I was you I would look elsewhere when it comes time for obedience training. :p

Hi Sheltiesrule,

Thanks for your post...great to know I'm not alone. I really want my dog to be social with other dogs and well behaved but I think obedience would be better. Am looking into it today. Was really embarassed about the BARF thing.....makes me feel like a terrible mother! :p He's happy and healthy though so that's all I care about.

It your right to whing.. your payng for it!

If you dont feel comfortable i suggest you find a diff place.. The waiting room of a vets surgery doesnt sound very proffessional.

You pup wont feel comfortable if you dont!

I wouldn't worry too much about the food thing - way back in the olden days there was no such thing as dog food - dogs ate the scraps and I doubt they were 'balanced'... Still, they managed to live to a ripe old age and ours certainly NEVER had a sick day in his life - there was no vet for 300 miles, so just as well. :p I tried the 'more expensive' and 'balanced' brand they mentioned - it made my puppy sick, so I now feed a good quality supermarket brand. She is thriving on it, so they can jam their snotty dog food you-know-where. You are NOT a terrible mother!

Thanks so much Rob! The BARF diet must be good because we are having major hassles with him 're-eating' it if you know what I mean. He only does it when we're not home. Any ideas on how to stop him from doing this............anyone? We're desperate!!!

We had puppy preschool at our vets in the waiting room, it went for 4 weeks and was intended as a basics getting into puppy training and care and a bit of a play and then they gave us info on obedience clubs to continue with

It was great but we didn't expect too much as it was a freebie that they did for their clients

The real puppy training came when we started obedience training in puppy classes

Have a look around and see if you can find somewhere else that you like, what area are you in?

Oh we always cop it when we go to the vet about barf too! Eddie was weaned onto it and didn't we have to have a lecture every time we went to the vet as a pup :p

Now, not that money is the issue...afterall we'd all give our last dollar for our fur babies but this one costs $80 for four weeks. Like I said, we will perservere with it as it probably is giving him some great socialisation but will be glad when its over. I think your'e right Shoemonster, I might have been expecting too much. Most of the things he learns there are stuff he already knows (drop, sit, stay, shake etc). We are both now looking forward to obedience classes! :p

I loved PPS - and so did Darce!

I had the choice of two puppy preschools - a vet run one 5 mins away, or the one at the obedience school we now attend (which is over an hour away! :) )

I chose the obedience school one - the instructors were all really good - there was one on one instruction, they broke it up so there was play time, toilet time and training time, and they were good at keeping play time under control so that smaller/shyer puppies weren't getting clobbered!

I have a feeling that if I'd chosen the vet one I would've been very disappointed.... just some of the comments that have been made when I've taken Darcy in for vaccs....

I really only intended to take Darcy to give her a head start in obedience, but found she got far more out of it from a socialisation point of view than anything, and even with the obedience stuff I've learnt, I will definitely take my next pup to the same PPS!

I think as long as you get the socialisation correct and make sure your pup isn't getting beaten up or clobbered (or vice versa!), then you'll catch up with everything else when you start at your obedience club! It is disappointing when you're trying so hard to give your pup a good start though! :)

Good luck for when you start obedience! :D

Unfortunately by the time we realised about puppy preschool , Riley was too old.

We took him to obedience classes though.

If we get another dog we will definately be prepared for puppy preschool so we dont miss out again.

:D Because our boy came home over brfore Christmas...there were no puppy schools runniing till the new year...he was eligible for obedience club then. So I bit the bullet and went to some off lead areas to socialise with other dogs, big walks where other dogs were, and even advertised for other puppy owners on a local forum site. Lots of other dogs from which he learnt a bit too much dominance for my liking but no pups. SO we missed out on the puppy class experience
