I grabbed a couple of cans of the Pal Natural (Chicken & Rice)...because it said no aritificial colours or preservatives(& we have a dog that need to avoid them because of skin allergy).

But I was disappointed when I saw the fat level was 9.7 %...nearly 10%.

I've got to keep one tibbie's weight down & the other get an upset tum if there's too much fat in her diet.

So it'll be back to TuckerTime roll (from the vet's) for our dogs...as the 'soft food' to mix with Supercoat Lite (or Bonnie)....along with lean chicken & veggies.

When I saw the ad on TV, I thought I saw "coloured" bits in the kibble.. So my first thought was that it contained colours to give you the "vege" look.

Whether it does or doesn't. That was my first impression. So whatever the voice over said, did not wash as the picture infront of me was of coloured dog food.

It does look a bit suspect, could be beetroot or something like that but i doubt it,you get what you pay for i suppose so you have to choose for yourself and what your dog will eat.IT still contains large quantities of fat and sugar .i like the ads though the dogs all look great especially the springer spaniel(i think)at the end of the ad the voice over suggests ate something from the bin, probably more nutritious than what was in the pedigree can

FWIW, out of interest I had a good look at the ingredients and analysis on the bag of the adult kibble in the supermarket last night. Didn't like what I saw. Can't remember exactly, but the protein % was very low. and the protein/fat ratio was much lower than I like - I like about 26/12 for my guys.

sky- exactly

as for the colorful bikkies, it ses on the ingredients it contains NATURAL preservatives and coloring, this also could be a play on words, like how kfc used to use Chicken Fillet - which was the brand name being 'chicken' so we were eating chicken branded fillet NOT chicken flesh fillets lol

i dont think il be buyin it again anywayz, O`ren isnt too keen on it, she prefers supercoat active, i think she prefers the blander bikkies, plus her skin allergy seemed to get better when she was on supercoat

she seems to have a kind of eczema (looks like mine!) il take her to the vet for a fresh opinion about wot to feed her,

can anyone vouch for the kibble that actuually ses its Allergy prone dogs specific?

You can't say a kibble is allergen free because it depends on what the dog is actually allergic too. Nothing is Hypoallergenic, its just that somethings will be more common for a lot of dogs to react to... but that doesn't help if your dog is allergic to that thing.

>>she seems to have a kind of eczema (looks like mine!) il take her to the vet for a fresh opinion about wot to feed her, <<

Many dogs have allergies to dry food products. I would suggest switching her to a raw food diet, and removing the dry, processed food from her diet altogether. Aside from the other health benefits, most dogs, once the grain in their diet is removed, show huge improvements on a raw food diet.

No. All kibble is a processed item. Dogs were born to eat raw bones and meat..... not small pellets of processed food remains.

Aaahhh but due to peoples fiddling with breeds we have created dogs with allergies and sensitivities to red meat, chicken, rich meats like lamb and roo, certain vegies...same kind of issues people are finding in themselves...lol.

But in general...not all dogs do better on Barf...Bronx certainly didn't (is on kibble with raw on the side) and i know several other people on DOL who have dogs that do better on a kibble or kibble/raw diet. Barf is a great diet...if it it suits the dog and the owner. I find the super premium kibble with raw on the side suits me...and more to the point suits Bronx as he's looking darn handsome on the current diet :) :p And Sabre the pup is growing very nicely as well...lol

Oh...just in case the weird thread thing smooches this post with the with my previous one.............................................

Proplan make a kibble based on salmon for sentitive tummies and skin...a few people i know have their dogs on it and have been very happy with the results...

How can anything cooked and processed be considered natural for a dog's diet????

I agree with that! I guess people should ask themselves if they would like a diet that constitutes of dehydrated second rate material for themselves and whatever the answer is then simply apply it for yourselves. :) ;)

I have a hard time believing that fillets of chicken or lamb or fish are used in dry dog food and this applies even to so-called premium dog foods, commercial dog food consists mostly of second-rate grains with low levels of protein and even those that claim to have added vitamins are not using good quality vitamins but I do agree that it's much more convenient to feed a dog a dry food because all you need to do is pour it in a bowl and hey presto the deed is complete whereas a barf diet is too much like hard work for some people, at least that is what I have been told upteen times by alot of people, both in person and in other forums, I have lost count how many times I have heard that people simply can't be bothered with wasting time preparing a barf diet :p

Eeerr...ok...don't hold back now Zorro 007.

I tried Barf on my GSD...i would have liked to have kept him on it...but he was losing condition badly and nothing i did made any difference (even adding oils, huuuuge amounts of barf food {no actually $$ savings due to the purely huge amount i was having to feed}, anything i could find to combat the condition loss)...until i put him onto RC with raw/barf on the side...his condition came back, he no longer looked starved, his coat was no longer dry, brittle and crappy...But sure...i could again put in the little effort of Barfing...and have my dog lose condition due to MY choice :p

Exactly.

I also tried a full BARF diet with my GSD and he lost condition and his coat was shocking...AND he didn't even really seem interested in it. He's a Bonnie boy, darn well loves the stuff, it's the only thing he'll lick the bowl clean for :p

kitkat, I find it incredible that your dog is doing better on a quizzical dehydrated diet, wow wonders will never cease! Doesn't Royal Canin contain BHA, BHT and Ethoxyquin?

Don't expect an unbiased response to this post: KK sells a "leading brand" of kibble with the initials RC. :mad

My dogs are raw fed and they have never been better. IMO most dogs do much better on foods that are as unadulterated as possible and raw foods of good quality are exactly that.

As to the question posted, Pedigree All Natural is just cheap food packaged to appeal to consumers who *think* the brand's new formula must be good! Anything that is that processed, that is that highly coloured, cannot be all natural. :vomit:

Our Tibbie girl got painful hotspot after painful hotspot...so I listened to the people who advised no artificial colouring or preservatives. And switched to Tuckertime dog roll (from the vet's) & Supercoat lite kibble...with veggies & can of tuna in springwater added.

The hotspots stopped...after 3 years of battling them constantly.

She'd had no skin allergies up to age 7 yrs (was a showgirl...like Best in Breed at Sydney Royal standard). When she was desexed at 7, she developed an allergic reaction to the material used for the internal sutures (vet's diagnosis...& painfully obvious). From then on, she suffered hot spot after hotspot.

Then for past 6 months (since change of diet), she got not one hotspot. UNTIL I grabbed a pouch of PAL chicken 'mince' for small breed dogs...when vet was out of Tuckertime. Next day, our girl had a hotspot! I double-checked the ingredients...& among them was 'colourings'.

I'm not so sure about that. I thought it was because of all the additives in dog food and fresh dog meat etc. and the culmulative effects of same.
