He discovered where I had hidden the kids easter eggs and has devoured two large chocolate bunnies ;) The only reason he didn't eat the rest was cause they are in boxes. Will he get sick? Ruffles Posted April 15, 2006 Share Posted April 15, 2006 Loki once got into a box on Liquer Chocolates... ate the whole lot and was fine. Maybe a bit drunk but didnt even get diahorrea (sp?) Theobromine affects the central nervous system and the cardiovascular system. This can be fatal. If you suspect your animal has eaten chocolate Call the vet. Do not wait to see if the animal will be alright . Irregular heartbeat and convulsions can come on quickly if the dog has eaten enough. Easter is always a bad time for this to happen. Ruffles - PLEASE don't go around telling people it is ok for dogs to eat chocolate just because your dog didn't get sick. Your dog was lucky. I work in a specialist vet hospital and we see dogs with chocolate toxicity all the time. I am dreading going to work tomorrow because I know there will be a lot of dogs who need their stomachs pumped. Even a small amount of chocolate can kill a dog (and this is straight from a first aid book for dogs, written by a specialist vet) - " as little as 250-500g of milk chocolate, or 30-60g of cooking chocolate can kill a 5kg dog." What you need to look out for: Signs of overdose include excessive salivation, neurological symptoms (seizures shuddering/shaking/twitching/convulsing), diarrhoea and vomiting – these can lead to a coma and death if left untreated. These symptoms may not show up for several hours, but can lead to death within 24 hours. If your boy shows any of these symptoms or is not acting like himself, please see your vet or get to an emergency vet a.s.a.p. - better to be safe than sorry. pampa Posted April 15, 2006 Share Posted April 15, 2006 This brings back memories When I was a Nanny in a Paris family years ago, I was alone with the kids around Easter time when we started hearing the weirdest noises coming from somewhere in the house... We finally tracked it down to "Mousse" the geriatric Cocker Spaniel that had happened upon the easter stash and had eaten every one of the kids eggs and was barfing up gooey chocky into the seagrass matting ... Daisy Posted April 15, 2006 Author Share Posted April 15, 2006 Clyde is fine. I rang the emergency vet yesterday and had a chat, asked them what to look out for. The vet didn't seen to know as much as Bowser! He had to go and look it up. Kept a close eye on Clyde, no nasty symptoms, he is happy and alert, but will be watching him today to make sure all is ok. hlk70g Posted April 15, 2006 Share Posted April 15, 2006 Good to hear that Clyde is OK. A few months ago my 1yo Samoyed boy ate a whole block of dark chocolate! I rushed him to the vet and they made him puke for an hour solid! Mmmmm......choc sauce! Even after having his stomach emptied he was "high" - when I got him home he was running around all crazy and playing strange games he had never played before! Lesson learned - don't leave chocolate within reach of dogs! ...and you know the worst part? That block of choc ended costing me $105 and when I got home, and I needed chocalte the most - there was none for me to eat!! Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
