Jacquel83
Hi All, I'm new to this forum and would like to know more about puppy training. I have a 16 wks Golden Retriever and we just finished with his first puppy socialisation class(which is pretty basic)..would like to move on but not sure where to go. The only ones I've heard of is the PUPI puppy management class, and the one from RSPCA. ANy comments or advise/recommendations regarding this? THanks lots! sandyl
What part of WA are you in? If your in Perth, I recommend the Perth Training & Obedience club. They train on Wednesday nights at Raphael park in Victoria Park. They start at 7:15. Next week's graduation but we start again next term. I did the RSPCA obedience class level 1 with my German Shepherd. I didn't quite like it. Found it more of a socializing experience then training. But we did do things like sit, drop, stay, heel ect. Anyway, if you go to the Vic Park obedience club, its $2 a lesson plus registration which is $40 im pretty sure. Would love to see some pictures of your pup! Jacquel83
Hi Sandra, where do u live? morley? Thats y i find travelling to Vic PArk a bit tedious cuz i normally gets home around 5 plus near 6, also cuz Im working in Kwinana area. For now i guess the most convenient one would be the RSPCA training held at Malaga, heard any reviews on it? BTW, GSD=German Shepherd? For your viewing pleasure. My first boy Bobby,
blue elephant pjs
PUPI with emma is awesome. i took my rottweiler (he is now 1) there for puppy training then management and he did really well. they are praise orientated but i used treats at home my rottweiler is so well behaved and is doing great at bedience we changed to northern suburbs after this course finished but i highly reccomend emma (if you get her) as she was very gentle with the dogs and got results from some dogs that you wouldn't expect to see a change. Firm but kind and she really teaches how to teach loose lead walking so as not to use a halti or harness. Good luck with your decision. Edited to add PUPI stands for People Understading Puppy Interaction. The training is basically skills for you to use to teach your dog any command i enjoyed it but others may not like the style as it isn't like northern suburbs or others i have seen. Anna H
Northern Suburbs is pretty good as far as puppy classes go and run on Sunday morning... and you can move up to the next level of training once you and your pup are ready. Fees are about $50 a year and you can attend as many classes as you like for this.
sandyl
Yeah, GSD= German Shepherd dog. We live around the corner from Dianella. It takes us about 15 minutes to get to Obedience. We take the Great Eastern Hwy from Belmont, stay on it till you can go left onto shepherton or right to canning hwy. We go right, then at glouster we go left. Then there it is. Do you want a proper corse for your pup or just the basics like sit and drop? I found the RSPCA training is a bit basic.. Btw, the pics of Bobby are adorable (Sorry, cant be bothered spelling right.) Jacquel83
Its hard to choose between the few training schools, but right now I've narrowed my decisions to between Midland and Perth Training. May i know whether both of the training schools conduct Agility training?(even thou i know my puppy is too young for that as he's only 17 weeks) The reason being I do not like to keep changing schools and if possible, keep him constant to a place. Also the venue and timing for both training sessions? Would Midland be more convenient for me? DO they start the classes together and progress together? Or isit like Northern Suburbs whereby you progress on your own? He's just had his puppy socialisation classes...wondering how should he progress from there.. Any comments or advices would be gd. THAnks lots!

Mitzy
Glad to have this info. Useful for a new puppy owner (or about to be, anyway) like me. And new to this area, too. The Perth Training and Obedience Club link does not seem to be working, but here is the one for Southern River which I will check out. http://www.agilitydogclub.org/ Will let you all know what I find out. sandyl
Meriment you betta be starting next term The training at Victoria Park starts at 7:15 on Wednesday nights. At the moment we're having a break for the school holiday break. We start again in the first week of term 2 which is the 3rd of May i think? It's at Raphael Park in Vic Park. The Perth Training & Obedience club also has agilty training at Ashfield Reserve of Friday nights. It starts at 6:30. It's with the same club as the obedience but at a different place. I think theres also agility training in Vic Park. Not sure. In Vic Park, it's $40 i'm pretty sure for a year then $2 for a lesson. (Lights, instructors) Last term we progressed through exercises at our own pace. We could ask all sorts of questions to the instructor. Then at the end of the term we had graduation. Maddy passed so now we're onto the next level. If you have any additional questions you can stay after and ask the instructor. I'm not sure about the Midland club as i've never been there. To get to the Swan Valley from here it takes us about 30 minutes. (Go to school out there..) To get to Vic Park it takes us 15-20 mins. Perth Training & Obedience Website seems down as Mitzy said. But on it is basically what I've said (dates, times). It's up to you..
Mitzy
I will probably go to the Perth Training and Obedience Club, because I think it is closer. But Vic Park isn't that far away. I have been using a groomer there (for the cocker spaniel) so.... Who else is starting in about a month?
sandyl
There's a few people that go there from DOL, Mitzy. There's Boxagirl and me. A few others go but i cant remember them from the tp of my head. Remember Mitzy, there's also the one in Carine. Ask Chelseas mum about that one. (She posted a bit further up..)
Mitzy
My husband says Vic Park is just as close as Southern River(? Southern River, is that right? You know, by Canine Corners) and I know my way around down there because of the groomers and we have friends who live in Vic Park and the OpShops, Oh, how I love Op Shops! I have only been here for a while from the States, so I get lost easy! Maybe I will see some of you there. If there is a lost looking American with a little black poodle, that will be me!!!! blue elephant pjs
Midland is 30 seconds form my house. Their groups are normally pretty big and am not sure if you progress together. I have seen agility courses set up there though not sure if they are on same night etc. I believe it is a positive club and it is about $40 then $2 every week for lighting etc they only have enrolments every few months though so best to call first. Mitzy
Glad to see this topic pop (ha, ha, I wrote pup!) up again, since my little fellow comes home this weekend!!! Yay!!!!! Sandra or anyone else, do you have some contact for the classes at Vic Park? I will look online and see what I can find, but that sounds like a good class and I can start in a week or two (after we see the vet and all).
