Cancer In The Hock Muscle

Recommended Posts

Gosh I hope we both get the results we crave Mita.

The Vet rang at 2 and said Wags was not eating, had been given more pain killers and was still on a drip. They were giving him until 4 pm and if he still refused the chicken then I would go up to feed him or try to. I desperately want to see him but I hate the thought of upsetting him as his leg is still open and has to remain calm.

I was ready to go and the phone rang at 3:45 to say he just decided to polish off the bowl, so he is eating which is great.

Any ideas of where to get a crate - will need a big one as he is a big boy. Reasonable price would help as the Vet bills are killing us - dont get me wrong he is worth it

Hi Karen and Wags,

Poor lad must have been missing you Karen...

I have my fingers crossed for you that it is all good news that comes back...

Well he is still eating which is great

But his leg is still weeping through the bandage, so the packing can not come out till tomorow. I am not sure what they will do if they cant stop the bleed. Cross that bridge tomorrow I guess.

Yes it is not the same around here. His brother is so darn mopey as is Mia - he is her play buddy. After Renbury today took them both for a long romp which lifted them a bit.

Just strange as Wags changes the balance of our family - we need him home

Fingers crossed this will happen tomorrow.

Karen

Is Ollie eating yet ??

He is not home yet.

The bandage was changed yesterday as he still had seepage.

The Vet on duty was scared if she took the packing out and he bled - she would not have help.

Today the wound was unpacked (metre of gauze) and he was still bleeding slightly. He has been stitched up and a drainage hole left approx 0.5 cm long. If blood does not seep through overnight then he can come home tomorrow afternoon. Apparently he is smiling at ppl and enjoying attention which is great. He is still eating but would not wee. Typical shepherd behaviour. So they have been squeezing his bladder when he goes out. But Wags is shy with his toilet and never goes when he is away from home :rainbowbridge: Trees and hydrants are safe from him. When I told the Vet this they relaxed as it is a Shep thing.

Prior to being knocked out again today he started talking back as well, that made me laugh as it is so him. Always has to have the last word.

Fingers crossed all goes well tonight and tomorrow

Apparently he is using the leg quite well and has not had painkillers since saturday. Although I admit he was knocked out most of today

Seems so strange as he has not been around much for the past week.

Don't get me wrong it is worth it to have him well.

So good that Wags is eating & responding so happily to people. And great that the bleeding has been checked.

I know what you mean about some dogs only wanting to wee in their familiar place. Our Sheltie used to 'hold on' until she got home, whenever we took her out.

You're right...there is such a 'hole' in family life when one of the 4-leggeds is in the vet hospital.

Here's hoping for more positives this week.

Oh Karen, I'm so sorry sweetheart :p Fingers crossed that the operation was a sucess but just keep one thing in mind sweetheart, he can get around on three as easy as four and the priority is that he grow old with you.

Will pray for Wags tonight, I'm wearing whoever is up there, ears out at the mo with all my prayers :rainbowbridge:

Lots of Love

Sorry I have been so slack - I truly am losing mmy mind

Wags was allowed home on Tuesday afternoon, the leg would not stop weeping.

He was so happy to be home sp are we. He has been good and kept quiet and Jack and Mia have not hassled him. That was a relief as I did not want to seclude him. Eating, going to the toilet and slightly using his leg - all is good.

The results were back on Wednesday but noone rang me :banghead:

I have just come back from the Vet now, had to get his dressing changed.

He has a grade 3 Haemoblahblah tumour. Sorry forgot the name of the rotten thing that is in his blood. It is now highly likely the spot on his lung and the inflamation of the groin lymph is the same thing.

We have $%^& options,

1 remove his leg, may work but more than likely the C has spread

2 Chemo - but this type of chemo does not work well on this type of cancer

3 remove his leg plus chemo - stats are low of success

4 make him as comfortable as possible till the time comes

I asked again how long - I am stunned to say 2 MONTHS ONLY!!! This is absolutely F#**#* :banghead:

Sorry I am sitting here going nuts

So not fair - spent his 5th birthday getting fistulas out and now this.

All Wags records have been sent to Sydney Uni for analysis. I will get a report early next week stating any other possible options and based on experience they will give stats of survival re each options.

Sorry I could not repond in an upbeat or positive way.

I need to win Lotto over the weekend - badly.

I truly hope Ollie is getting better - could do with some good news :banghead:

Thanks Pixie and Riley for the positives they still cant hurt (can they).

Sorry a bit teary, down and totally at a loss.

Oh Karen, my heart goes out to you and Wags - I am so sorry...

Chemo rarely cures cancer in dogs, all it does is put them in a remission... They cannot recieve doses big enough to cure the cancer as they do not have the luxury of being able to have a bone marrow transplant like humans...

But in saying that, Ollie has done really well. He does not get sick from the chemo. He gets sick when his immune system is low and he picks up other infections... I knew when I started this road with Ollie that he was never going to be cured - we just want him to be with us as long as we can have him... He is also being treated holistically by Sue at All Natural Vet care (Sydney). The ladies there are wonderful beyond words... If I had my time over, I don't think I would do anything differently. I think that the chemo and the holistic treatments (our wonderful vets are working together), complement each other really well...

Lucinda (dogbesotted's) girl has only ever been treated holistically (same holistic vet as us) and she is still her 3 years later...

You have plenty to think about with what is happening in your life at the moment. If you want to talk, PM me and I will give you my numbers.

Big hugs to you and Wags, we will be thinking of you.

Inside your head must be screaming and you must be feeling overwhelmingly helpless babe :o

Don't give up hope, you have Jodie and Dogbesotted in your corner with their wealth of knowledge. Like Jodie said, he can't be cured but maybe he can live a few more years, you coudn't be in better hands for information or support.

Only time I've wished I was in Sydney since I got here so I could give you big :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Lots of Love

Riles

PS: I've never gone through it with a fur kid but I've lived it with an Aunt who we had at home to the very end.

aaaaaarrrrrrggggghhhhh! My heart aches with yours Karen! I do know exactly the turmoil that you find yourself in. It is like a living nightmare 24 hours a day.

Have you thought of a consult with a good holistic vet? It is well worth the try in my opinion Both Ollie and Lucinda are being treated holistically ( Ollie as a support, Lucinda totally holistically). It sounds a bit like you are thinking of hemangiosarcoma, hemangiopericytoma. Do a search and read heaps. Join one of the canine cancer groups and get info from ppl who have and are travelling the same road. Arm yourself with information.

.

I know that this is easy for me to say but try to keep calm...Wags needs you calm and focused. also as to the "how long", I personally know of MANY dogs who have lived happy full lives for much longer than the estimated time suggested by their vets. With Lucinda I was advised to "Take her home for a few days to say goodby" way back in September 2002....These time frames are averages only. keep in mind that cancer is a WORD not a sentance!

Sending you many positive thoughts.

Hugs

Helen and Lucinda ( who has once again bounced back)

I just wanted to add that DOL has been a wonderful support for me and Ollie. With some members that offer great advice and others emotional support (that we would be lost without)...

So feel free to let it all out - you will be amazed at how the DOLer's come to your rescue, every time it gets to be a little too much...

Hugs

Oh, Karen...Staffyluv's so right, DOLers come straight thro' with support at times like this. An awful lot of us would know just what you mean by that going nuts feeling.

You're doing the best you can for Wags...which is why he's so happy to be home.

Let's know how thing go.

Karen I am really sorry to read this about Wags... can they tell you if the cancer has spread past his leg? If not, get it taken off... if the other options are the only ones... go with 4. It's hard but I know what you're going through...
