Scope
this question is out of sheer curiousity, it is not an attempt to put you down in any way... but why do you feel the need to have a dog to protect you? and as far as having a dog that will protect you, you have to be very careful about how you train them or you'll have a loose cannon on your hands... a lot of the time simply having a big dog with you will be enough of a deterrent... but how about you just teach the dog to 'speak' on command? a dog barking at someone who wants to have a go at you will generally put them off in a big hurry, if they werent initially worried simply by the presence of the dog... there doesnt need to be any biting or attacking involved... speaking as the owner of two aggressive dogs (who feel the need to protect themselves, and couldnt give a shit about me), it really is a pain in the arse having such an animal out in public... you have to be constantly aware of your environment and what your dog is doing, and constantly scanning for anything that could possibly be considered a threat by the dog... so unless your dog is trained correctly, you're just going to end up with a big problem on your hands... if you let us know where you are there might be someone in your area who could help you out with some proper protection and bite work... but please please dont just try to do this on your own, for your sake, and your dog's.... Erny
ok im not inn a club i want my dog trained to attack people and protect me i will have him trained by anyone if u wont help me And that's what we've been trying to do, sfg-shep. To undertake this training on your own is not only downright dangerous, it is, as I understand it, illegal (unless you undertake Schutzund, who have a 'way around it'). Jeff, or anyone else more knowledgeable in this field - correct me if I'm wrong. sfg-shep .... trying to do this by "internet training" is not sufficient. You need to get yourself involved in a Club that can properly coach you and your dog. This is why we ask you to let us know where you are based. If you really do want proper help and intend to do this work with your dog responsibly and sensibly, PM Jeff with your location detail (or rough idea of location, at least). Did you look up the link Jeff put up for you? If you genuinely seek our help and are serious, genuine and responsible about your endeavours and intentions, you'd do well to follow our suggestions. Chell
Can I please make one thing very very clear to you sfg-shep Schutzhund IS NOT about training a dog to attack a person. A schutzhund trained dog IS NOT an aggresseive dog, it bites a sleeve not the man wearing it, it is taught from a young pup that this is one big game, the dog has to show self control in order for the game to continue and for him to get his reward which is to bite the sleeve. Please do not attempt to train your dog to do this on your own, you need a qualified trainer and I think you need to justify why you are wanting to do this, if you wish to participate in the sport of Schutzhund then great but you will also have to train your dog in obedience and tracking too, it is not just about the bite work. A schutzhund dog is also not a personal protection dog, it is a friendly, intelligent and confident dog that participates in a sport it does not go around attacking people on command. Your pup is still a baby, do some obedience with it, build its confience in you as a handler and itself, socialise it etc. How do you even know at such a young age if it has the right nerves, drives or can take the kind of pressure of such training to be a personal protection dog? If it doesnt and you try and train it yourself you will end up like Scope said with a loose cannon on your hands that may attack out of fear and you could really ruin an otherwise well rounded dog. Please consider all this, I am not having a go at you I just think you need to get some help as at the moment you are heading in the wrong direction with this pup. Nekhbet
At the risk of repeating myself: 1) this pup is too young. You pushing him will do nothing but make him a nervous wreck that will become nervous and withdrawn and then you've wasted a potentially great animal 2) You train this dog to be dominant without the right help you will be bitten or attacked yourself. Its a fine art to direct the real aggression that you want and not something you should do yourself. The Schutzhund clubs WONT help you because you show yourself to be irresponsible. Go through them and your dog will be trained to be confident. THAT is the key to protection not being able to bite. 3) If you decide to train this dog to attack in a cruel manner by taunting or beating him you should give him up now and not own a dog. Its a life, not a friggn ego trip to own a dog that bites. 4) If your dog bites someone you will face criminal charges. You trained it to bite, you knowingly owned and encouraged a dog to be vicious you will face charges. Good luck with jobs or anything else that will require a police check. An adult dog out of control can not only maim but kill, even a child. Theres an easy recipe for having a dog that will protect you: Good genetics Intelligence Courage Confidence A strong bond and relationship between owner and dog I have a dog that has done some Shutzhund and she is a great guard dog. She will sit quietly in the loungroom with guests, let kids hug her and kiss her face but has shown she will protect me. Most of it was from her breeding and the fact we share such a strong bond. MonElite
sfg-shep if you are in Sydney I cant tell you who NOT to go to to train your dog, however you seem to be determined to train your dog regardless of methods, and potential reprocations of having such dog. You expect US here to tell you how to train a dog for personal protection? Next thing you will be asking is how to perform a brain surgery.... Perhaps you live a dangerous life, maybe invest in a bulletproof vest, they are cheaper in the long run than a dog.... Personal protection training isnt something you learn on the internet forum.
