Labsmum Posted March 12, 2006 Share Posted March 12, 2006 (edited) I have a foster Rotti who arrived yesterday with a bad cold (very snotty nose, like very). He is now on anti-biotics (it is difficult to get him to eat or even take his medicine but he will from my hand). I thought it was not too serious but tonight there was blood on the carpet. I took him straight to the vet after he arrived hence the anti-biotics. What do I do now? I have to work tomorrow. The poor fella (a Rottweiler) is miserable, skinny and sick. Our vet gave us antibiotics and our springer had to rest. I also put him on Robert Mcdowells kennel cough mixture which helped clear the mucous from our boys lungs. I gave him a cap ful of mixture into some natures gift morning and night for 4 weeks. The bottle was very large and costs $42.50. The antibiotics stopped our springer from getting a secondary infection and the kennel cough mixture cleared up his awful cough. Daisy Posted March 13, 2006 Share Posted March 13, 2006 KayeL if you are going to keep fostering you will get used to kennel cough. Every foster I have had has had it. It is a virus, and usually it clears up on its own, but takes about 3 weeks to go away. It sounds as though your boy is very unwell though, and the snotty nose suggests a secondary bacterial infection which your vet is already treating with the antibiotics. He needs to be kept quiet, and please do contact your vet if you are worried, because sometimes dogs with kc can develop pneumonia as a secondary infection. Labsmum Posted March 14, 2006 Author Share Posted March 14, 2006 I feel like I've been a full time nurse today, had to wipe his nose about 50 times (then wash my hands again etc) His appetite is improved and got him to eat some good food today. Only worry is he doesn't want to drink now. I tried a nice warm beef broth, no interest. I have got some water into him with a babies bottle, but it cannot be enough. I can't tell if he is getting better or worse? How many days should it take for ant-biotics to kick in. He started them on Saturday, it is now Tuesday. This is him looking miserable. I managed to syringe some water into his mouth but not enough. He is now going back to the Lort Smith for reasessment (as soon as I can get someone to help me get him [32kg] into the car) He might have to be admitted poor fella. Send some good wishes for him please. -------------- I just got back from the Lort Smith and the first thing he does when we get inside is have a big drink of water. Vet had another good listen to his chest and it is still ok. She said he should be responding faster to the anti-biotics so has now changed the ones he is on. If it is not better in a weeks time she said they will have to put him under anaesthitic and look up his nose for any foreign objects. I was just worried of course cause of not drinking but the vet said his hydration was ok and they get water from food too. Unless he hasn't done his business today, the good news is he has put on half a kilo in 4 days. So lets hope the new antibiotics kick in faster. Labsmum Posted March 16, 2006 Author Share Posted March 16, 2006 I have good news on Blocka, they changed his anti-biotics from Amoxyclav to VibraVet and the new one seems to be targetting the bug. He is eating and drinking and his poopies have gone from being runny to nice solid Rotti ones. He is about 18kg underweight so no wonder he has had trouble fighting off this bug. Anyone who knows, I got him some biodynamic liver (there is a butcher nearby that sells organic and biodynamic meat) and he loves a bit of that added to his meal. He still has a slightly runny nose but can breath through it now. Now we have to get some weight on to this boy. I'm looking forward to seeing his real personality once he is not miserable and sick. This boy is a new dog having his sense of smell back. He is testing me about who is in charge. I'm not familiar with the breed. Blinkin stubborn and head-strong!
