Please Help Very Sick

Recommended Posts

Hi my friends baby sheltie is REALLY REALLY sick  he has been sick ever since he had his C4 vacc 2 weeks ago, he is only 18 weeks old.

He was very lethagic but eating little had the runs was given antibiotics then was coming good. Th past few days he has turned down hill again very fast  the vets have done blood tests and also I think have done some tests on his poo??

DO you think this could be from his vacc? or do you think maybe a blockage? or selmalnela (sorry for spelling) from chicken? he also spent 2 days on a drip...

Bird flu hasn't come into Australia yet, so I wouldn't be panicking about that just yet. There's not much you can do except try and keep him hydrated and get him back to a vet. Has anything come back from the test results?

My pup had salmonella when he was just home (possibly from eating chicken) and constantly had the runs. The vets gave us a tablet to give (can't remember name) that reduced fluid loss in the stools, but this only worked temporarily. They also tried us on food product after food product, none of which worked (and probably didn't help with changes of food). I finally changed to BARF and the problem went away almost immediately (even though it was a complete change in food types - not gradual like suggested). If they choose to go BARF best to maybe start off with some cooked white rice mixed with some steamed and blended veggies (carrot, spinach, brocolli, etc) and a small amount of minced meat (potentially cook this to begin with). The most important thing is that the fluids are kept up -vital in a pup with the runs because they loose so much water.

Definately keep regular checkups with vet (hopefully the blood test will show something) - and potentially may need a intravenous drip to keep the fluids up if it gets too bad. Giving a pup antibiotics that is already unwell will lower it's immune system even more (but may be necessary to kill the involved bugs), but is important it gets given some good bugs for the gut to compensate for this (probiotics etc). Make sure there aren't any unecessary stresses happening around it so it can concentrate on getting better.

Depending on the blood test results, they should be very careful in the future about vaccinations, as some dogs can develop bad reactions that can be fatal. Make sure the dog it in the best possible health if/when you vaccinate next. Do a search on DOL/google and you will find out plenty of info on over vaccinating. A titre test might be the best option.

Sending good vibes

Tim

I dont know about a puppy, or a dog having had it, but I do know of someone's cat who had Giardia. The treatment is the same as for humans, Flagyl or fenbendazole (Panacur).

It is caused by contaminated water, are your friends on water tanks, or a bore?. They can have the water tested which wil show up bacteria.

Hi OBS

That pup is the same age as my Sheltie Kasper I hate to think of such a baby boy being sick....all I can say it that a friend of mine had Giardia from drinking contaminated water on a holiday in country Victoria and she has recovered but it took a while....I think they should ge their water tested.

If this pup has been unwell since his vaccination he MUST have the homoeopathic remedy "Thuja" which is used in cases of vaccinosis. Some vets use it, most have never heard of it, but any homoeopath in the yellow pages can provide the remedy, which you can administer yourself.

One or two doses of Thuja are often sufficient to start the healing process.

Colloidal silver is excellent as well - it kills viruses, fungi and bacteria, as well as helping with internal parasitic organisms. I have used it many times on very sick animals, usually getting a noticeable improvement within 2-4 hours. It has the bonus of absolutely no side effects - one side effect of antibiotics is appetite depression, which can be quite severe. Flagyl in particular has some very serious side effects. Robert McDowell sells colloidal silver and does mail orders all over the world as well as here in Oz.

There was a bit of an 'outbreak' of Giardia around here a few months ago - I am not sure that it is infectious dog to dog but maybe where a number of dogs share the same drinking water they can cross infect each other ? Certainly there seemed to be quite a few who walk in the same park who went down with it round about the same time. I think it is often water carried ? Anyway, although some were pretty sick I think they all recovered so your friend's baby should be OK (though it is always scary when they are little & sick).

There are so many variables here it's hard to say what caused the illness. OBS you mentioned chicken as a possible culprit, I would not be surprised at all. Chicken goes off very quickly and if not cooked correctly can be a problem. I strongly suspect boiled skinless chook being a major source of my boy's suspected Inflammatory Bowel Disease (still awaiting test results). We were told to feed him bland food every time his ummmm "squirts" started, boiled skinless chicken seemed perfect but now we have found the squirts start every time he has the chicken, he's fine on Hills i/d.

Rasberry juice cordial and water can help with Giardia or "scour" but it must be at least 25% juice to have much effect. The internet is not a solution for a proper vet diagnosis though, none of us have seen your friends Sheltie so we are really just guessing. I do hope the little tyke is OK and the problem is sorted soon, little ones can go downhill so fast.

Regards,

Corine

Glad to hear he is sounding better OBS but could be a number of things. From a gastric bug to eating something he shouldn't have. Just glad that your friends got him to the vet straight away. Little puppies can go down hill very quickly without vet care.

Suggest they also do a thorough search of the yard to make sure he hasn't been eating or drinking something he shouldn't. Puppies are like children, they can get into so many things around the place.

Hope he recovers quickly.
