Eden
I was just wondering as to what brand you favour in the way of pet clippers? And for those in the know, how do I keep my blades from going blunt after only one use? Is it okay to wet clip or will that blunt the blades? capanash
My personal favourite clippers are Moser... followed by Wahl... then Oster If you want you blades to stay sharpe NEVER clip wet or dirty coat!!! Always wash and dry your dog throughly befor clipping. Clipping wet coat will cause your blades to rust. Also after every use, brush the hair off and then oil your blades. Dogsfevr
Double K & as capanash said no wet, dirty coats besides the obvious it would take forever to do a wet coat & the finish would be awful. Ideally you want to clip a clean dog, knot free & regulary. As to blades depends what blades you have
Guest talbra
I have Double K Cable clippers for the pets and Moser for the show dogs. After having the Moser I wouldnt use anything else. I have also used them ( with a different blade) on my show pony. The Moser has a single bldae and you can dial it up from a 10.15,30 & 40. When they dull you throw the balde away and buy a replacement blade. Clip only clean and dry as previously said!
Eden
Thanks for you fast replies. I have to admit that I have never heard of Double K or Moser. Will do a search and see what I can come up with. Okay, so the trick is to never clip a dirty coat but what if the coat is so matted that if you wash it it will take forever to dry, what do you do then? I clip my friends and neighbour's dogs and some of tthem do end up with a badly matted coat, much to my disgust!! I have a pair of Oster golden 2 spd clippers but the downside is that they got very hot very quickly unfortunately and I have place an order a couple of weeks ago for a pair of Andis 2 spd clippers as I have heard numerous reports that they don't tend to heat up quite as quickly as the Oster, fingers crossed. Is it okay to dip the blades in metho in order to cool them? I do have the cool lube but I have heard that it tends to dull the blades so I haven't used it any longer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I clip my friends and neighbour's dogs and some of tthem do end up with a badly matted coat, much to my disgust!! Some groomers will do a prep clip and that is roughing in a dog and getting the matts off before a bath, often they'll use skip blades for this and yes it does blunt the blades, but you are saving shampoo and drying time. Some groomers will instead wash a dog, HV (or not) and clip the dog WET, but you can only do this with cordless clippers for obvious reasons. This is actually faster and you can often get a longer blade under the hair - of course the finish is crap so you dry the dog (sometimes rewash in neccessary) and then finish. Don't leave the blades sitting wet, dry them off immediately and oil well. You have to weigh up what will work best for you.
ShesaLikeableBiBear
Have had Laube's, but they were quite heavy, now have Wahl KMS. You have received some great advice from othere here, if you need any more help re sharpening of blades, servicing of clippers, contact Nicestman on here, he has a wealth of information and is very very helpful. Dogsfevr
If there coats are matted i hope you charge a good price because matted coats & blades long term mean you lose out.I Personally im not a fan of the 2 speeds & wouldnt own them

================ Hi there, Oster get hot because they have Brass Bush Bearings on the shaft of the armature, plus they block-up with fur all the time, hence there is no ventilation through the inside of the clipper, and that will never change. Andis AG 2, have lots of cord failers, just where the cord goes into the back of the clipper, when it happens to yours, replace the cord with a completely new cord from the local hardware, that should fix the problem for sometime. Never cut wet/dirty fur, clipper blades don't like it, it is liken to thrashing a brand new razor blade in a bucket of sand, then using it to shave your legs, it wouldn't, and boy, it would hurt, clipper blades cut fur not dirt! Try not to use Kool-Lube, it only cools the outside of the blade metal which in turn warps the metal, and dries the metal out unless you re-oil every time you use it, plus they say it causes CANCER only in California, I bet. For Blade Tips go to: www.freewebs.com/clipperbladesharpening or www.clipperbladesharpening.biz I will advise you, if you ever require any info,nicestman77 Edited November 4, 2008 by nicestman77
poodle3081
The best value for money cliper on the market is the Wahl KM2. It is used by most professional groomers throughout Australia and sells for around $230 on eBay. Dont touch Oster; as the Nicesetman said they use out dated technology and there is not a serious professional groomer in Australia that would use them. Andis are also a good clipper but more expensive than the Wahl; they have addressed the cord problems they had with the early models. Laube are over priced in Australia and do not offer value for money. Double K are the choice of some professional groomers as the will drive harder than any other clipper, but the price is generally to expensive for the home groomer. Definitely wash your dog first and if you can afford a good quality dryer then you can dry and clip a short time after. If you need any additional advice feel free to contact me. Poodle wrangler
I've bought blades and had one sharpened by nicestmann77- excellent service & quick postage. Cheapest I've found, too. Check out ebay.com.au Pet Grooming Supplies e-bay store. I have Andis clippers but they're just OK, I'm a novice, too.
Eden
Thank you all for the great advice. Nicestman, I had a look in your website and found it extremely informative and I will be sure to send my clippers your way for some serious sharpening
Poodle wrangler
For those who like Moser clippers, which model do you use? A dial-up blade sounds convenient. Are they more expensive to maintain vs. conventional way of changing blades? I am thinking of clippers for a miniature poodle (thick coat) and future standard poodle. poodlefan
I've used both Wahl and Andis 2 speed and way prefer the Andis - better fit in my hand.
schnauzer
Nicestman has recently been fixing all my blades for me and he is the absolute BEST. One blade that had been back three times for sharpening and still didn't work now works perfectly. He is fantastic. I'm so happy to have found someone who actually knows exactly how clippers/blades/groomers work.
pampa
I've been using (and selling BTW) Andis AGC 2 speed and the AGR + cordless clippers here in France for 6 years but not for dogs FOR HORSES ! I know they are supposedly specialty canine clippers but my boss has been using his AGR= CORDLESS for a full clip on his show jumpers for years and years and I clip my horse 4 times a year with mine, without a problem... We use a tiny bit of Andis blade lubrifying oil once or twice per clip and use a light aerosol cold spray to keep the blades cool, all along the duration of the clip. I love Moser, but I prefer Andis PS : Oster blades are interchangeable with Andis blades...
