Mag dog crazy Posted February 17, 2006 Share Posted February 17, 2006 (edited) My 1 and a half year old female, kelpie x staffy is aggresive towards people, especially children and dogs. I am guilty of not socialising her as a puppy and I am afraid I may pay the price for that forever. Is there any hope of her losing the aggression? Call around for a dog trainer that will work with you one on one before you go into a group situation. MAKE SURE THEY ARE QUALIFIED/EXPERIENCED WITH DANGEROUS DOGS. There should be someone here who can give you a referral to someone good ;) Also, start reading THIS The articles are written by a dog trainer/breeder that deals with police dogs/aggressive dogs. When you read some of the articles have a good think about how she behaves in general. Dont immediately think 'oh she doesnt do that' maybe she does and you dont notice some of her behaviours/warning signs. The key to this is consistancy and education. Remember also you have to follow advice to the letter and stay at it! Things like this are not a quick fix, they will take time. It it not really something to be fixed just over a forum but we're all glad to help you any way we can All hope is not lost you just have to gain control back over the dog. It sounds like she's a bit spoilt and just needs to be taken down a peg or two. I would also invest in a muzzle for when you take her out in public if you cant trust her to prevent accidents. DO engage the services of a behaviourist who has the experience and qualifications to deal with aggression issues, and do so as quickly as possible. The longer the behaviour symptom is left inadequately treated, the longer and more difficult it is to alter. I'd be inclined to go for the services of a 'specialist' in the area, rather than the generic services provided by some franchise type businesses/companies. Your question (above) is impossible to answer over the net, but DON'T LOSE HOPE. Many an aggression problem has been able to be at least managed to a suitable level. Good luck. I would stay away from it just because they would not be good for your problem which would work on several levels. ETA: Sorry to go slightly OT here people, but just wanted to say a big sorry to the Perthies if you haven't heard from me yet in regards to getting K9 over here... pregnancy has pretty much got me zapped of all energy right now... will be picking this up again soon... so if you are still interested, please post in the thread! Please contact Steve at K9 Force and he should know someone in Perth to assist you. When dealing with aggression you need to work with someone with a lot of experience in the area - Bark Busters are not, just like DogTech they have the same methods for everydog and you need an individual assesment and training/treatment plan. Well the 'Cert IV' delta instructors would certainly have experience in reading body language, managing problem behaviours and showing you how to avert potentially risky situations. I have a book here called 'Click to Calm' (healing the aggressive dog) by Emma Parsons...I must admit I haven't looked at it in depth yet (it's in the 'to do' book pile :D ) but have heard others having good success with it. Please share your opinions. Please do NOT go to Bark Busters, some of their trainers are grossly inadequate. I would never use them especially for a serious problem such as this.
